Going through some of my reloads I did a few years ago I came across a load written on several boxes of bullets that said 4.2 grains. This is for a lead boolit of course. Seemed like a pretty high amount of powder for this load. Anyone use this much of this powder in a 125 grain lead 9mm load?

RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 shows the starting load of 3.7 grains 700X, max load of 4.1 with their 9mm-124-RN which is a gas check bullet.

Hodgdon website list a max of 3.4, 3.4, and 3.6 gr 700x with a 125 gr bullet. Oddly they list 4.2 gr max with a 124gr bullet. OAL is listed at 1.150", which is a touch longer than their 125gr loads. They also list 3.9 gr with a 130 gr bullet, so their data is kind of all over the map.

Probably touch a couple off and check the primers. Thanks guys.

700x was the 1st powder i used. Only bought it one time. I didn't like how it metered. Universal was the second one. I like universal.

Speer 3.4 max 700x 125 lead. Shot ok for me. These dont seem to be +P loads?

Seems a bit hot. Lyman cast bullet handbook shows max load of 4.0 for a 125 grain cast HP boolit. Be careful!

RCBS Manual - max loads with 700X :
124 gr. plain base truncated cone boolet - 3.1 grs. (909) to 3.6 grs. (1040) max.

Then the loads for a gas checked boolit :
124 gr. gas check round nose _- 3.7 grs. (1094) to 4.1 grs.(1043) max.

Looks like the gas checked boolits get the velocity nod .
When I ordered a 124 gr TC 9mm mould from NOE I had it cut for a gas check and I'm glad I did ...GC's help with hot loads and soft alloy .

I need to experiment more but, 3.5 was very snappy and I had strange primer signs yet velocities low even in a 3in barrel. Im thinking a slower powder is called for.

My 4.2 grain load shot 1150 fps. Primer strike showed some bulging around the pin mark but not really alarming. Primers weren't flat. Shot 50 with no issues. Loaded 59 with 3.5 and got 950 fps and primer marks not quite as severe. Probably stay with 3.5. Not afraid to shoot the rest of the 4.2 now either.

I have powder coated 125s. I'll make up a box with 5 each of 2.4 to 3.4 when my new super accurate scale comes in and try that.

I'll start at the top and work down. I know at some point you will get rounds that cycle but won't lock the slide after the last shot, and your economy rounds should be 0.1 grain more than whatever that is. I have a 9mm revolver I can shoot the others in after the Glock stops working.

EDIT: To my surprise I got all the way down to the last row loaded at 2.5 before the slide did not lock back. And no malfunction at all before that. So my load is 2.6 apparently. That should make the powder last.

Side note - Almost none of my 9mm reloads would chamber in my Uberti cattleman 2. But all worked in my Glock 17. I had actually loaded a box of 9mm Black Powder rounds - and fired them out of my Glock one round at a time (as they would not cycle) but they all worked. Now I think my Uberti itself is the problem and not the reloads.

Some helpful information here. You can load plated and coated same.

So I can go all the way UP to 4.2 gr of 700x. Today I learned I can go all the way DOWN to 2.5 before the slide does not lock, but they still cycle. Thats as far down as I went as I really thought I would hit a cycle failure before that point.
