Figured I share an odd find I have.

I picked up some used 30-30 brass that had some base bulge around head area. I have a Redding 32 win spl die set and took the rod out figuring I’d knock the bulge down before using the 30-30 die. To my surprise it was sizing the necks too!

Approximate ID of the various head stamps (range pick ups or just different rifles) were around .311 and after sizing with the 32 spl, were reading about .306-.307+/-

I don’t have a case gauge nor loaded them up yet, but figured this would be worth a try for anyone else concerned with brass longevity/work hardening

Interesting. The less neck sizing the better.

Perhaps 30-30 that had been converted to 32 Special?

Read the last posts on page two about rather radical fire forming.......

Possible, but not the majority of the lot I bought. The body bulge cases were absolutely sized more (maybe strong hand loads?). I first noticed when rotating those cases halfway, but the entire lot was sized with the 32 spl die. All ended up with the +/- .306/7 range depending on neck thickness.

Disclaimer; none have been checked in chamber or case gauge

If you are getting .307-.308 that is not a 32WS sizing die. 32WS is 0.321

Correct, about the .321. Dies are designed to size lower diameter then open up the neck with the exp button.

Perhaps it’s a tight tolerance die. Even if other 32 spl dies size to similar diameter then maybe larger cast boolits could be used with less neck work.

Interesting-- my 32WS die doesn't size down that far before opening up. Learn something new every day

This is kinda sorta related. I have a single shot handi rifle in 280 Rem. and the die set I have is the Lee 2 die collet neck sizing only set. After about 3 times firing neck sized brass in that rifle the shoulder moves forward enough that you cannot close the action.
Being I have 30-06 regular full length sizing dies I found that if I take the neck sizing stem out and just use the die body I can bump the shoulder on the 280 cases back a few thousands and the cartridges fit fine and all is good.

The 270, 280 and 30-06 all have the same shoulder angle but at a different length so whatever the next larger caliber is you can bump the shoulder back without sizing the neck.
