No, there may have been a very few in 44-60.

That would seem to be a 44 caliber bullet with 20 grains of black.

My guess would be there is no such chambering.

Sorry to sound so ignorant on the subject. It was just a spur of the moment thing when they asked if I would like to see it. The lighting was poor and I could see very little stamping. Those were the only numbers I saw. If I get a chance to look at it again where would I look for markings. This was the first time I had even held one. I appreciate the info. Please bear with me on what may be stupid questions about it, there may be more. I try to research the internet but those results are often vague so I turn to the wealth of knowledge that is here.

Thanks,
James

I did a search and saw some breach loaders (schutzen?) before bringing the question here.

If you saw the 44 and a 2, that 2 was likely followed by 1/4 (44-77) or 5/8 (44-90)

Thanks Don. She did have about 20 rounds of ammo that looked as old as the gun. Much longer than a 45-70. Hoping to get another look at it. It needs some attention to get some surface rust cleaned up and oiled well. The action was smooth. It did have double set triggers. She does not want to sell it. It has supposedly been handed down in her family for many years.

Betting it was actually marked "44 S" not .44-20. If it is marked .44 S it's likely the .44-77 Sharps Bottle Neck cartridge.

Yup.

The old cartridges often don't have markings on them either.

Sharps didn't mark their barrels the 44s, that's a Remington deal.
