Thought about going to the range today, but it's
To cold for the chronograph..
What's the coldest when you go to test loads.. maybe Tues. I see it might be ,40 degrees..

Wind is more of a bother than cold. Below 20 F is usually the cutoff for me.

Here, it's colder than a pawn broker's heart.

If you are looking for the coldest when testing loads it was -11 when chronographing my sharps. Trap shooting at -25, several shotguns refused to fire at that temp.

If we were to go on Christmas day over here it's supposed to be right at 80*.

Today it was 30F with 0-10 mph wind and I was test firing a 24" LSI Puma (Rossi) 92 lever and a 16" Chiapet 92 lever, both chambered in 44 Magnum, but I was firing 44 Specials. Fired 30 rds through each in about 25-30 mins total outside the Jeep. Wasn't cold at all. (The good news, both the 92s handled the handloads just fine; the bad news is the Chiapet's mag follower gets stuck where the mag tube is ground for the rear band screw. I'll just turn and polish a mandrel to push through to iron out the "dent" in the area thinned for the band screw, and then thin the diameter of the screw a bit, but I digress . . .)

If the temp gets in the teens I don't stay long; ironically that's when I have the range to myself. If the temp gets in the single digits I wear furs and snow camouflage, and snowshoes, and shoot a Finnish 28-30 Mosin with a 180 gr cast GC over 12 gr of Unique in old Norma 7.63x53r cases (yes, that's correct, x53r). The Soviets pile up like cordwood. ;)

The colder, the better. The days the range is empty is when I like to test things. The warm days I just shoot.

45 deg. or warmer , I'll shoot outdoors.Today was 35 deg.and spittin snow so fess'd up 5 bucks to use our club's indoor range.Fingers can't take the cold.

I tested loads at -36°F in 2019. Just the only time I had! Wasn't fun, wasn't truly necessary - but I shot my ladders and got through it!

Hot or cold aren't the issue with me; it's the wind and rain. I shoot on public lands. Even if the temperature is pleasant, if the wind's blowing like a hurricane I can't get anything productive done. If it's raining - that's just a misery.

Same for me. Wind above 20mph is usually carrying enough sand to make it miserable around here. I like to shoot when the wind is 10mph or below.

Temps? Not many days it is below freezing down here so temps don't matter much. I'd rather it be in the 30's than over 90F.

Rain? What's that? :)

It was terrible when I went last week, I mean, I had to wear my windbreaker almost the whole time.

PA resident … last weekend was mid 30’s and I only lasted about an hour and my digits were starting to get stiff … was just an ok day. Wouldn’t want to go much lower and still try to enjoy it.

What is the coldest weather you intend to hunt with, using your cast bullets? That determines what temperatures I like to test my hunting loads out at. I want to know, what to expect on that first critical shot out of a cold barrel. Might be several inches off, due to lube and powder selections.

its not uncommon for it to be in the - range on the temp gauge at camp in deer season. Ive also seen it as warn as 60. Ive seen bare ground, rain and ive seen 2 or more feet of snow in deer season. By muzzle loader season in the first week of december theres about always snow on the ground.

For me, if it goes much below 30F. Then I move to the covered rifle house. That's where I live until spring.

When the temp gets under 40deg F I don't have much interest in shooting or choreographing.

Mid 40's is my cut off. I go to the range to enjoy myself and have a good time. Colder than that and it starts to get miserable.

I don't mind being out hiking, chopping wood, or moving around, but just standing around shooting doesn't get enough blood flowing and your hands start to get cold which then make shooting not enjoyable.

20's and sunny most of the time, I will occasionally leave a rifle and ammunition in the extreme cold - 15 below to 0*F to check point of impact for the first shot. I do have my own range, wind keeps me off the range more than temperature, 15-25 mph is common and 35 plus mph not rare. Wind drift is not as much of a problem as the wind moving the firearm and me, even on the bench.

I went last week when it was about 40 or so. I shot at the pistol range until I ran out of ammo.

Our club has an indoor pistol range so if it's really cold or raining I use that.

I only go to the club during the week and I'm usually the only one there.

I have shot in 12 degree F weather when it was pretty calm but it was about as much fun as a visit to the proctologist.

For us we look at a couple factors. 1st is rain we're automatically out, next is the combination of wind and temperature. if it's hovering 30ish and windy the crowd thins out, if it's 20 with no wind we'll have a few but they will only stay a couple hours. Single digits I question why I rushed out. We have a group that shoots weekly on Sunday mornings. Now back to the accuracy side. I will work on fine tuning down to about freezing but much below that I save it for a better day. I just don't get the results that I'd like when I have a chill.

My sentiments precisely. My fingers get cold to where I can't load a magazine and that is too cold for me.

34 degrees, raining, and 99% humidity is pretty normal here at my club range in Dec-Jan. Those conditions seem colder to me than near zero temps and the low humidity of Nevada when we go down there.

Worked in the cold and heat for 40 years but I’ll attend a cas match even if it’s cold. Plenty of clothes and hand warmers. We have called shoots that became too cold to continue or even cancelled depending on what the weatherman forecasted. It gets to the point that it’s not fun.

Yeah, I'm a sissy. I don't think I've been to an outdoor range when it was lower than 40 degrees or so, mostly just 'cause it was So,CA. I've gone shooting in light rain/sprinkles with one of my SS guns, no big deal.I don't wear gloves and reloading a 38 Special in the cold ends in 25%+ dropped rounds as cold fingers don't get it for this grown up So. I have some experimental black powder cartridge loads I need to try. Shooting range is right out my backdoor, so the temperature isn't a factor, but the wind IS. The wind will blow away all that black powder smoke before anyone gets a chance to choke on it.

If I have to check my zero for some reason, it won't matter what the weather is, I'll go shoot 'til I'm satisfied the sights are right. For recreational shooting, 50-60 is OK for outdoors but colder than that I'm on the indoor range. I don't handle cold as well as I used to, I still search for a reason why I've not moved to Arizona!

I'm good down to 45 degrees with little wind. What annoys me is my house is well sheltered from the wind, I get to the range and the wind is twice what I expect. We have enough decent winter days that going out in colder weather isn't really necessary.

With Winter set in, we shoot in below freezing weather every Saturday. Moisture in the air is rare.

A guy in my shop swore Rem-Oil would lock up a 1911 below -40.
I was taught 1911's should drip oil and rattle.
It does get much colder than that at the range by the river.
So I got the two dripping with Rem-Oil and left my wife's Kimber and my Springfield parked in my truck all day. The UAF sign said -40 a fine day for the test, thick ice fog. Both pistols cycled fine, but the smoke condenses and turns them black, may have been some unburned powder, a sooty mess to clean, after a box of store-bought Federal. To be fair, if you bring a very cold pistol (or tool) indoors it will frost and be wet, take it back out, refreeze it and the ice might be a problem. Keep pistols warm and dry or keep them in a ziplock bag when cold.
But the SRH did not ever care about temperature at all. A 44 warms right up.
Dress in layers!
I don't live in North Pole anymore it's too cold for old folks...
Wife was just saying she misses the Spirit River though.

Weather was -4 °F in the morning today, when I went shooting it was 3 °F.

Weather is a clothing matter to me, layers. My fingers tend to freeze pretty bad at first with thin shooting gloves but when they warm up again, shooting is easier. Fingers won't freeze that bad any more. My heart and circulation, the whole cocktail, is not very good any more, stent and all,but I manage.

Other than a quick stop (less than 30 min.) for a function check or to test-fire a load, 25-30 deg. (F) with wind under 10 mph is pretty much my limit these days...and then it's insulated Carharts, Sorel boots, and scuba gloves!!

I just got done testing those experimental black powder loads. Temperature was around 35 degrees, and the wind blowing. Had only 10 cartridges to test. That was enough for today.

Got work finished early and was thinking going to the range. Went out to get the recycle bin and it was 25 degrees. Opted instead in doing a bit of reloading in the comfort of my own home instead.

Something that I neglected to mention - I do purposely go shoot when it is in the negative double digits. I test all of my hunting rifles and new loads because of where they are used. I have discovered that using certain primers are far less reliable in extreme cold. The one that really sticks in my mind were in my lion hunting rifle - federal small rifle primers resulted in a lot of "clicks" with no subsequent "boom" and several delays between pulling the trigger and discharge in that particular 32 WCF carbine.

I agree! All the snowbirds are gone, the heat is on, and the wimps stay indoors, so I have the range to myself in the afternoons. Something about shooting in 120 weather freaks people out. You just have to be wary of leaving black guns in the sun too long. :D
