Arsenal .45-70-330 Gr. RF and 5744?

I'm new to 45-70 and not having much luck in finding a trapdoor load for the Arsenal 45-70 330 Gr. RF boolit using 5744. Maybe 5744 is just not suitable for this boolit? Rifle is a new CVA Scout V2 45-70, 1 in 20 twist bergara barrel I believe, tight bore slugs at .457. I do have other powders and of course black, just wanted to try the 5744 I have on hand and start at trapdoor velocity/pressure. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I use that bullet with 43.0 grs of IMR 3031 and have great results but in my current trapdoor it hits about a foot high at 100 yds With 5744 Iv'e had good luck with 29.0 grs . Any trapdoor load for the Lyman 457122 will work as its the same bullet but without the hollow point.

You answered your own question with with the question; "Maybe 5744 is just not suitable for this boolit".....

No, 5744 is not suitable for cast bullets less than 400 gr if you want to keep at TD pressure levels. 5744 requires a minimal pressure level to burn efficiently. Cast bullets less than 400 gr do not have the mass for the pressure to raise to the necessary pressure level Unless the bullet is pushed harder than necessary for best accuracy. I suggest a powder that ignites more easily such as 2400, 4198 or 3031.

Thanks Larry! I found some IMR4198 this morning, have a few pounds incoming. No 8lb jugs that I could find. A bit pricey, after shipping, tax and hazmat $50 per pound but I guess that is the way it is nowadays. I'm glad I found some. I can use it in other calibers too and is something I wanted to add to the stash.
This project is moving very slow but will be updated with results eventually.

$50 a lb? Geez, my last few shipments from powder valley was $35 hazmat for the whole shipment of multiple pounds, both BP and smokeless.

I don's load that particular bullet but I do load the Lyman/Gould 330HP. 29-30 grains of 5744 or 26 grains of 2400 are very accurate in my 1886 Browning and my Sharps. Both pretty much duplicate the velocity of the original express loads. Accurate shows up to 31 grains of 5744 for a 300 cast in their Trapdoor data.
