Yep, one man's junk is another man's treasure. There are some good buys out there, if you know what you're looking for.

Congratulations !!! I think the flatlanders call it upcycling.

if the flat pan is teflon/non-stick coated, and it looks like it is, do not heat it to high temps (above a couple hundred degrees).
at higher temps it will give off very toxic gases.
google it if you dont believe me.

The thrift store came through for me. Picked up a whole ream of onionskin paper for patching bullets for less than a dollar. Gotta like that!

Wow, do NOT know that. Thanks for the heads up. Only paid $2.00 for the flat pan & was going to use it to keep the molds warm & preheat the bars before adding to the pot. I'll look for a cast iron one now.

If you can come up with a round metal can, like an old 3# coffee can, cut it in half then cut a 'doorway' into one half in to which you would insert your mold. This way you're containing the heat from the hot plate and you can preheat ingots on top.

Coffee can in a hot plate makes a good mold preheater

I went into our local Goodwill last weekend and found a pewter tankard for $1. I was tickled!

And if you want a marker board to jot down project notes on just grab a glass covered framed picture for cheap that you wouldn't mind having on the reloading room wall.

I would take it outside and burn off the toxic non-stick coating. It should be fine after that.

Wagner cast iron is collectable. Don't ruin it.

My advise is to find some imported ChiCom junk cast iron pans for melting lead as the antique cast iron is too good for such tasks.

No way I will ruin this pan for melting lead. Needs a little clean up and it will be used for cooking.

I picked up 35 pounds of #8 shot for $5.00. With my $1/lb. powder and $10/brick primers at an auction, was loading for less than a dollar/box. Made one mistake though. Passed up a 20 gage MEC Jr. for $10 because I didn't own a 20 gage. Two months later, I did.

I spotted something behind the tellers on the fancy shelfs at the thrift store. It wasnt a couple bucks but was an Adco red dot. Made in Japan and a great scope. Its on my WM 10/22 SS carbine and really shoots.

My Kimball Baby Grand came from a Habitat thrift store. Love it, the nicest piano I’ve ever owned. I found some shepherd hook plant hangers and hung some of my 1/3 size sass marshals on them, they work fine. Lead cas loads only.

Hey Baltimoreed, where did you get 1/3 size SASS Marshall targets? Are they available through SASS? I'm not a member (I was doing Cowboy Fast Draw instead) but I'd love to have some additional novelty targets. I did get five little "rubber ducky" cut outs, and those shepherd hooks would be good for hanging them as well. Interesting reactive targets make teaching younger shooters a lot more encouraging for them.

we sure were sold a bill of goods with teflon, as bad if not worst than lead poisoning.

https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/is-teflon-coating-safe.

and this is one of the corporate friendly sites

thrift stores can be great source for cheap pewter too
but my biggest problem with thrift store pewter is girlfriend forbids me to melt most everything we ever find.

Good score but ditch the Teflon skillet (DANGER! DANGER WILL ROBINSON) go to about any metalshop, get them to cut you a round 1/4” piece of steel to put on top of your hotplate. That plate of mine has outlasted two of the stoves……every single burner stove I’ve had over the last 25 years has been under $10 at Walgreens…

Green Frog, I can’t remember where they came from. Look on line. I have 3 sizes, the full sized ones were bought from my club when we upgraded. The others were bought either at a big gun show or on line.

I have a 9x9x1/4 " piece of steel plate that works great. Have a can to make it into a oven to preheat with.

I find stuff all the time at the thrift store, heck the lazyboy I'm sitting in right now came from a thrift store.

You'll like that Wagner, I have one just like yours that my mom said thy got for their wedding. in 1947.

I use a dull 7-1/4" saw blade on top of my hot plate to spread the heat and give me a flat surface to sit the molds on to pre-heat.

Cheaper than having a custom cut piece of steel. But I'm a cheapskate.

Got a double hotplate 2-3 years ago, $2 or $3. 2 months ago got a dehydrator from a booth that had every item marked down to $1, was tagged at $15.

Yeah, but there is such a small actual amount of teflon that the amount of noxious gas emitted is trivial.

Echo

See previous response dealing with micro-quantity of teflon giving off micro quantity of noxious gas.
