View Full Version : 4227 uses?

Had lunch with my dad yesterday and he mentioned that he bought 8 lbs of IMR 4227 for a .32-40 Scheutzen match rifle.

He sold the rifle and still has the powder and offered it to me for free. The powder is probably 20 years old.

I shoot mostly 10mm, .40 S&W, .45 Colt, .308 and .30-06 AI.

Is it worth messing with it for any of my calibers?

It will work with boolits in .308 and .30-06 at target velocity. There is a classic "Ruger only" load with 4227. A little research will turn it up.

Back in the 60s and 70s IMR4227 was a go-to powder for 30 Carbine under a 110 gr jacketed, or cast boolit. Primary reason was it generated sufficient gas pressure and volume at the right time from ignition to operate the M1 Carbine operating slide.

In the early eighties, during the heyday of Sillywett shooting it was THE powder for the 44 mag and cast boolits.

I use a lot of 4227 in my Ruger handguns,, especially the 44's & 45's. It's also excellent in the 357 Max. It's a very very good powder.

As others have said, it’s a great powder that will work in many applications! You be lucky.....I waited/searched for almost a year for 1 pound to try out in my 460 S&W! memtb

Friend Outpost75, I’d be very interested in hearing your specifications for “full charge loads” for the 32 H&R and 32-20. My newly acquired Blackhawk Buckeye Combo 32 should love them! I used to keep a little 4227 for my 32-40s, but had too many other powders I liked better.

In the Ruger you can fill the case with 4227 with as much as it will hold using a drop tube and with 1/8" compression by the seated bullet, in the same manner as loading black powder. In any other revolvers don't exceed filling the case gently without compression.

Yes, assuming the .32-20 is a post-1918 heat treated S&W Hand Ejector or post-1930 Colt SA, or Official Police, but not a pre-WW2 Colt D-frame or Army Special.

While not giving the highest velocities in 450 Bushmaster, it does run a close 2nd, with accuracy being a bit better.

I use it in 10mm (revolver), .357 magnum, .300 BO, and .22 Hornet.

Great stuff.

I like it in the 45 Colt under the 454424, outstanding accuracy at 850-1000fps. Also use in 30-30, .308 Win, 303 Savage, 300 Savage for pleasant shooting - 1400-1700 fps with 150-180 grain bullets, also good in my Marlin 1894's, a 218 Bee and a 44 Mag. Got my latest 8 pounder just before the rush. In rifles it works much like 5744.

I use 4227 in the 25-20 rifle and the 45 Colt revolver. 20 grains of 4227 under a 250-260 grain cast bullet in the 45 Colt is a tack driver and not a "Ruger only" load.

38-40 , 44-40 , .44 Spl , .45 Colt , .22 Hornet , .218 Bee , .30 Carbine , pretty versatile powder . I load it in the 38-40 and 44-40 . Tried it in the Bee and the Hornet with moderate success but W680 worked so much better I didn't waste any real time playing with it for them. H110 is better in the .30 Carbine in my opinion but the 4227 is good . Works good in the .44 and .45 but Unique and 2400 , even Herco for my use are better powders.

Grab it and hug your dad .

Since it worked so well in my 32-40 for relatively mild target loads, I was wondering how it would do in the 32 revolver cartridges without this heavy a load. FWIW, I will be limiting these loads to Ruger Blackhawks, so high pressure should not be a problem, but I wonder whether it would be a desirable solution(?)

Went out and assembled a new exercise bike for dad and told him I could use the powder. He was reluctant now and said he would give me "a taste" to see if I liked it, and if so, then could have the whole jug. So, he poured a few ounces out of the sealed 8lb jug and I'll work up some loads with it and see how my XDM 10mm likes it.

He also had a few thousand large pistol primers stacked on the shelf he doesn't need. So, with the powder and primers, I could shoot 10mm and .45 Colt for a decade if I had to.

45 colt Ruger loads is good. You probably will not enjoy 4227 very much in 10mm auto. Bluedot is about ideal, I'm not sure if I've ever even seen 2400 data. I know nobody uses H110. 4227 is even slower than H110. It will probably go bang, but I wouldn't expect much. It may or may not even work the slide.

Really your dad should not have that much powder laying around and since the powder is so old and everything and might waste your time ..I am the Official Missouri Disposal Station for any and all powders and in any quantities up to and including 8lb kegs

...I will PM you the correct shipping address shortly so we can take the pesky nuisance off you "problems list"

How fortunate to have 8 #s of 4227 fall into your lap. I'm working my way through an 8 # jug right now, and it's really become my favorite powder for 44 mag. loads. Accuracy has been better than what I'm getting from 2400 (Not quite full power loads). Oh, and here's a few thousand primers too... NICE!!!

I use between 15 and 16 grains in my 30-30's with a 185 grain bullet from a custom Accurate mold for a very accurate and mild load. Shot several Beavers with a Scoped Marlin 336 a few years ago. I also use 4227 for reduced loads in several other cartridges. .308 Winchester and 338 Winchester magnum are two of them.
Good Luck,
Rick

Are you using a filler on your .338 WM loads! I’m presently using 4198 in my wife’s .338 WM with a filler. If I could avoid the filler......it would be sweet! memtb

I've been using it lately for a sort of heavy midrange load in my Rossi 92 .454 Casull using RCBS 45-270-SAA with very good results so far. I'm new to the .454, so not much experience with it yet.

Years ago I picked up an 8 lb can of the old IMR stuff that was on clearance at a local Sportsmans Warehouse. I never used it much in .357 or .44 mag, but I've been really happy with it in the .454 carbine, but I'll admit with this load I'm not chasing after top velocity.

In the .30-06, 21.5 grains of 4227 will give you about 1600 fps under a 180 - 190 grain cast bullet and a 24" barrel.

In the .32 S&W Long Larry Gibson ran some pressure tests for me and got some erratic hiccups during the rise to peak pressure unless the loads were running full snort for .32 H&R mag. pressure levels, so I don't recommend trying less than full-charge loads. Absolutely fine in full charge .32 H&R Mag., .32-20, .30 Carbine and in " mid-range" .30-30 loads which approximate full-charge .32-40, about 1600 fps for 150-170- grain bullet in .30-30 case.

Grabbed the powder today. Gave him $100 and left him a full can of it in case he needed some later. The can I filled for him was an old one from his store in the 90's. Wish I could find IMR powder for $10 a pound these days. Well, I guess I did, sort of.
