View Full Version : S&W Double Action Grips – Blu Magnum, BearHug, Straight Taper, Need Help!

I have a set of Blu Magnum Clint Smith grips (bought second hand, so not made specifically for my hand, but I have a normal sized hand) and absolutely love them, no other grip is even close to being so perfect for me. I had a set of Skeeter Skelton grips on order with Blu Magnum, but sadly Tedd passed away, and to the best of my knowledge nobody is taking over. I have yet to feel a pair of BearHug grips (can’t find a pair), but suspect they also would be to my liking. I really love a fairly straight taper (see pic below), so not a boot grip and not real flared at the bottom, and open backstrap. Also no finger grooves. I prefer nice wood but am getting desperate. In 2022 I need one set for a K-round, and another set for an N-round. The pic below is not my gun, but the grips look like they would work for me, but the owner doesn’t know who made them.

With all that said is there anyone who still builds grips like those mentioned above and pictured below? Appreciate any help or guidance. I’ve tried all the standard suspects: Culina, Altamont, Eagle, Hogue, Badger, VZ, Wicked, Nill, Ahrends, eBay, even Etsy, all to no avail, and I'm losing hope.

Howdy !

If the backstrap is exposed on the grips shown above, I'd say they were custom made for a shooter by Herrett's. It looks like their " Roper " design.

If the backstrap is not exposed, I'd say they were Herrett's " Jordan Trooper " design.
I use a set of theses on my custom M-520 4" heavy barrelled .357Mag.

Are the stocks you have generous enough in keyfit areas, that you might be able to re-profile them to fit you?

With regards,

I had a set of Herrett's Jordan Trooper for my X-Frame S&W (uses same grips as K-frame) and they were shaped exactly like your photo, but my grips were a wee bit larger for a larger paw. That design has a real good feel and helps control recoil, that's for sure.

Here are a set of Blu Magnum grips I got second hand on a NFrame round butt that was converted to 45 Colt. Pictures for reference only.

These are Ropers by Herrett. They are on and N frame but they make them for others as well.293131293132 They were made from a tracing of my hand and I have a regular, normal paw.293692

Thanks for all the info guys. I love the Rowen grips, and they're not too far away, but that price. I was hoping to spend less than $300. The Blu Magnums I have do fill all the key areas, and they make 44 Mag recoil feel tamer. I have contacted Herrett's and it took them months to get back to me (a real turn off for me), but I will try again, thanks for the push.

What I don't get is why grips, like boatswainsmate posted, are not made by the large manufacturers, it just seems to be a better design, to me anyway.

Herrett's Detective stocks...basically the Jordan Trooper grip with an open backstrap. They are not on the website but if you call ask for Dee....she can fix you right up.

A set came on a S&W 57 I bought and fit my hand better than anything else. When I was in Twin Fall's, Idaho in May I dropped by the factory and left the grips to be duplicated... They look just like your grips...

They were $165 a set plus postage...they were delivered in August as promised... That was for the basic walnut. They have higher grades of walnut and exotic woods for more money...

I have a set of Eagle grips like that and for me they're a little too flared at the bottom.

Grips on a revolver are almost as critical as good sights and action. The grips that came on my 24-3 were too large for my hand and I shot it better after replacing them. Hope you find a suitable pair.

Glad you may be able to get what you seek from Herrett.

"What I don't get is why grips, like boatswainsmate posted, are not made by the large manufacturers, it just seems to be a better design, to me anyway. "

Simple answer to this is that grip makers can not make enough designs to fit everybody's different hands,, AND in all the different models out there. Remember,, they need to make a profit to stay in business. So, they make a "generic" type of grip, to fit many people in general, and hopefully stay in business.
But other companies can offer specific things,, on order,, and for a bit more money,, to satisfy other needs.

I was also going to suggest you might contact "Lone Star Custom Grips" and see if he does S&W grips. His work is reasonable for the end results. His SA handgun grips are beautiful! I just can't recall if he does S&W grips.

Yeah, sure, makes total sense. It just seems like there's money to be made if someone mass produced a design like this, instead most DA grips have that flare at the bottom. I'd like a set in G10 so I can whittle away at it to suite my needs.

Just remember,, first you have different manufacturers of guns,, (S&W, Ruger, Colt, Taurus, Dan Wesson, etc.) THEN add in all the various models within these makers,, and you can see how quickly it could be a manufacturing nightmare to try & keep stuff in stock that fits all these,, PLUS the different shapes necessary for different hands.
That's why,, a custom route is often the best route.

Find a too-big open-backstrap set of grips and apply a 1" belt sander. Done.

The grips in the pic are Herrett's Detective model grips.
