45-70 success

Finally got it done and made some meat… in the last 3 minutes of season. I was carrying my Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70. Lee 405 pushed at about 1350fps by Blackhorn 209.
It is the last day of season and strangely slow. I hadn’t even had a shot until today. Sunset was at 5:09 pm. At about 5:30 I decided it was dark enough that I probably couldn’t see sights good enough to shoot. So I stood up and saw a doe in the cut milo field behind me at about 300 yards. Too far of a shot. My wife was about 1/4 mile from me and the doe was headed her way. I hoped maybe she would make it over to her quickly enough as she was shooting a 7mm-08 with a scope. Then, for some unknown reason the doe turned and headed straight towards me. Closed to about 100 yards then turned and headed to my left. Stopped broadside at the fence line I was standing by at about 70 yards. Up came the rifle, out of the trees there was enough light to see the front sight, hammer cocked, trigger set… boom. She turned and ran into the milo, and down she went. I took the shot at 5:36. Last legal shooting light was 5:39. Nothing like waiting til the last minute !

As a side note, I am 6’2 230lbs, and the Sharps has a 32” barrel. There’s a reason people like Kansas corn fed whitetails !

I grew up in PA too…….the Shamokin/Mount Carmel area! I miss corn fed deer too!

Great recap of your hunt. Glad for your success and meat in the freezer.
How soft was your Lee 405? I load those for off hand target practice with hard lead and Unique, but don't hunt with that combination, as I prefer a larger FP and softer alloy. Yet, it appears the Lee strikes again for you as well as many others.

The alloy is used was 50-50 COWW to pure plus 2% tin. My standard.
I don’t know about expansion as it was very much a pass through. Exit was a little bigger than entrance but very little rib damage. Lugs were pretty well shredded.

Congradulations of the fine deer and fine shooting. Your next step is to use real black. The first government load was 70 grains black and a 400 grain bullet. Later the infantry load was 70 black and a 500 grain bullet. Both were supplied to buffalo hunters by the case free. With a modern case you will only get about63 grains black in the case with a 1/4 inch compression with a cardboard wad over powder. Enjoy your ride it will shoot with the high dollar rifles out of Montana.

Thank you to all. I do have plenty of holy black. I save it for the flintlocks in the current situation and I like the convenience of subs for cartridges.
