Try to make an homemade gas check maker, hit a roadblock

First off, I am setting up to load for the 350 legend. Kinda stole an idea for a punch style but used two 1/8 in plated bolted together with washers to give space to slide aluminum thru (soda cans right now). Used the measurements for 30cal gas checks. Anyone know the size drill bits to do 35cal gas checks?

9mm is as close as you get at .3543. A letter S drill is .348. I'm not sure how you are doing this. I would think that a 9mm gas check would easily size down to what you need.

Thanks, going to work on it slowly. Have to make punches for it. Soon as I figure out how to post pictures from my phone, I post an picture

The disk you punch out will have to be bigger.This is to allow for the sides of the gas check. you will have to decide how high it will be.

It is possible to make a simple, crude gas check maker without a lathe:

1) is similar to what I am working on now but with 1/8 in plates bolted together

2) made one like it, not too sure where it is right now. Got divorced a few years ago a put a lot of stuff in storage.


Ended up ordering some sage outdoors. Doesn’t mean I am giving up. Just can take my time and slowly work on it and get it right

Have some disc size and punch size information
Disc 15/32”
Forming punch 47/128”, 3/8 may be close

I don't know where you are getting your numbers from but they don't match anything I have... not even close.

If you look at the links I gave you all the sizes are there for 9mm/.35 cal.

You should start by measuring the gas check shank on your cast boolits then look at the Hornady and Gator Check info to see if it is a standard shank size... it should be. If so everything you need is there. If not then you can alter sizes to suit the shank size.

The following was taken from Ed Smith's writing,

The first thing to do, is calculate all the dimensions for the check maker. I will use my lee .357 gc boolit as an example. it varies from the tables some what. the only way you are going to get the right dimensions is to measure your boolit.
To calculate the disc diameter, take the boolit shank diameter plus the skirt height times 2.
shank diameter - .338
skirt height - .055 x 2 = .11
disc diameter - .338 + .11 = .448
The skirt height is is measured from the bottom of the boolit to the bottom of the lowest band. subtract at least .005.
To calculate the check diameter, take the check material times 2 plus the shank diameter plus .002.
shank diameter - .338
check material - .010 x 2 = .020
check diameter - .338 + .020 = .358 + .002 = .360 check diameter.
to calculate check material thickness, subtract boolit shank size from sized boolit size and divide by 2.
shank size - .338
sized boolit size - .358
,358 minus .338 = .020
.020 divide by 2 = .010 = check material
ALL ABOVE NUMBERS ARE FOR EXAMPLE ONLY, THE ONLY WAT TO GET THE PROPER MEASUREMENTS IS TO MEASURE YOUR BOOLIT.
