Other than perhaps the melt temperature, it is all pretty much the same. Do you have the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 3rd or 4th edition? A little more specific might be helpful.

Try to find a copy of Lymans black powder handbook.

I have the Lyman books but they're for metallic cartridge. I'm looking for info on alloys and what molds work best for various twist rates.

Check in the muzzleloading section. Tons of info.

Basically for full bore bullets you want soft alloy, less than 10bhn. It needs to upset into the rifling for a good seal. I use lead with just enough tin to let it fill out the mold well, 1-40 kinda stuff.

Thanks Charlie. I have pure lead, 50/50 and Lyman #2 to work with. What ratio of pure to 50/50 would you use? I also need some molds but that's for later.

Well, 1-40 is 2.5% tin. So, if you have 10lb pure you'd need 0.25lb tin. So .5lb of 50/50? That would be close anyway.

If you want to be on the 'safe' side, start with 1/4lb of 50/50 and see how it casts. If it doesn't fill out well then add another 1/4lb.

What are you casting for? I use the Lee .50 S&W mold for my .50 Lyman GP Hunter (1-28 twist). 80gn powder, card wad, lubed felt wad and lubed bullet sized to .501. I also paper patch some after sizing down a little.

When casting pure lead minies, I found out that casting with pure lead is not as easy as an alloy with some tin in it.

The Lyman Black Powder manual will give you a lot of information on that. It gives lots of information and data with BP along with a lot of pressure measurements. Not much there for newer inlines though. It's mostly relevant to traditional rifles, shotguns and handguns (mostly revolvers).

Thanks all. I started looking on line for the books mentioned and realized I have them just had to find them. Packed and moved a shop I'd been in for over 40 years back in June and I'm still "finding" things. Now I need some molds.

I was curious how much you paid for it and if it was new or used. Over here Amazon wants 155 euros for a new copy and seventy for a used one.

That’s certainly a lot more reasonable. Thanks.
