Looking to make a couple lock bolts that are 8-32. Are these usually coarse or fine thread? I need to buy a die and want to be sure to get the right one.

8-32 means the screw is size 8 (refers to the diameter) ,,,,, and it will have 32 threads per inch
as in if you turn it 32 full revolutions-- it travels 1 inch.
An 8-32 tap threads such a hole.
A 8-32 die will cut the threads on a rod that will screw down into that hole.
Don't treat the taps or lies like a self threading screw-- they aren't, and will chip or break like a glass rod.
If you haven't done much of this-- council with someone who has, or watch a few youtube videos on it.
If you need a 8-32 tap or die, ask for it specifically.
If you ask for a fine or coarse thread, you might end up with a 8-24 or 8-48.

Good answer here. If you are matching up to a factory lock plate on a US manufactured gun, this is probably what you need.
If you only need a couple, cheaper to buy them, than buy the dies to make them.
