Tagged this guy last night along with the doe he was chasing. Shot him first and the doe stopped and looked at him. Can't say I'm proud of it, but I took a Texas heart shot on the doe. The 358 was up to the task. Shattered the femur and still penetrated all the way through the heart. It really didn't make too much of a mess at all in the gut cavity. Found the bullet laying in the chest cavity. Haven't weighed it yet but excellent expansion and almost certainly better than 50-60% weight retention. Load was the Lee 200 cast from 49-49-2 Pure, clip on wheel weights, and pewter over enough RL7 for 2300 fps. Rifle was a Ruger American. Between the doe my son shot the night before and these two, we should be eating good for a while!

No kidding! Got them in the fridge and on ice by 1am Sun morning. Got up early yesterday and cleaned up the shot ham and threw it on the smoker, then started working on grind and stew. Ran out of gas around 4 and had to quit but my wife carried on until the ham was ready (turned out great!). A couple more hours this morning should have us pretty well squared away.

An excellent utility rifle for sure! Recoil was getting a bit stout in the lightweight rifle so I put a muzzle brake on it. Really tamed the recoil, just have to be sure to use ear pro. I also got a 450 Bushmaster mag for it. It's not flush, and only 4 rounds, but it feeds flat nose boolits slick as snot! Not sure if it was me or the lighter rifle, but it didn't seem to hold as steady as my 9 lb Vanguard it replaced. I might experiment with a bit of lead in the stock to see if it makes any difference.

Very nice, wish I would have gotten one of those Ruger American 358 when they were around, just didn't need two 358 Win. I have a 35 Remington pump 141, and a Howa 1500 rebore 243 to 358 Win! They both are great! Congratulations to your fine shooting and harvest!

Great report,

I always did like the 35 caliber guns!!
Mike is a Rem 721 re-barreled to 35-06 many years ago.

Finally got around to weighing the recovered boolit, just shy of 180 grains, and nearly 2x expansion. Incredible that it retained that much weight and penetrated around 3 feet after hitting heavy bone. Yep, I'm sold on the 358!

One would say that is near perfect boolit performance.
3 seasons ago I Texas Heart Shot a large tough buck at 125 yds after already hitting him broadside. I, too, found that cast slug in the chest cavity after it penetrarated the left lung. I can perfectly picture your situation.

Well done!!! Good eats as well, huh!!

As with yourself and others I too have become a 35 cal./9mm fam. This year's dear was taken with my 9 X 71 Peterlongo. I have it loaded way down with cast bullets but, think 35 Whelen on steroids.

Good hunting.
Heavy tips at low speed are less damaging to meat.
The .338 is used with 250 grain Hornady Interlock SP O RN tips at 2,100 ft / sec.

Super Cool! I’m toying with the idea of a BLR in 358. Something that has super potential for almost anything!
Congrats on the two kills and the good vittles!

Congratulations on your nice buck......and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a “Texas Heart Shot” properly applied!

.358 Win. .....perhaps one of the cartridges for cast bullet application. And please pardon the “blasphemy”......jacketed handgun bullets at low velocities work very well for plinking and close range , big game (no larger than deer) hunting! memtb

I'm Jonesing for a .358 Winchester Jes 3 groove rebore. It's not If, it's When.....
I miss the Remington 700ADL that he did for me. A perfect hunting rifle.

As I recall, Grice was selling a limited number of the RAR .358 for a penny shy of $400. My son bought one, and we discussed buying a couple more as investments. I had a Marlin XS7 enroute to JES at the same time to rebore to .358 Win. Between that rifle and my BLR I figured my bases were covered. Given today's prices, really kicking myself for not buying a RAR as well!!

I was lucky enough to get one of the RAR 358's from Grices, one of my favorite rifles now, it loves 230gr Ranchdog boolits.

Nice buck, congratulations

The 358 was almost made with cast in mind
your alloy sounds like a perfect match for what you intended
don't ya love it when a plan comes together?

Great thread.

Another fan of the .358 here. Just cannot bring myself to change. I have a lifetime supply of .308 jacketed bullets and .308 cases. In the end...dead is dead. Was going to send one of the .30/30’s out to make into a .35/30 and had the same roadblock. What does spending $350 get me?

Anyway...nice buck and enjoyed your thread.

dverna; --Something Different! A new gun, something different. New thought process, new load development, & the list goes on & on. Or just own a 30-06 only, load it up or down as desired or needed for Rats to Rhinos & you only need to spend money on one gun. That's where the versa-06 comes from. I have changed my outlook now & have many, many different directions to go in caliber for caliber.

i'm a 9.3 guy, but the 35's are coming on strong. i have the 35/30 in win 94(1972) and i luv it. it was rebored by JES from a 30-30, which i have killed lots and lots of deer with it. it was my first gun, but i put in the safe 20+ years ago and there it languished. it must be 3 years ago that i sent the rifle to JES and every year it still kills deer. altho my eyes ain't what they used to be, i have put a williams aperture sight on it. since i was going to go with the 35/30, i spent $115 for the ch4d reloading dies, a little gift to myself:mrgreen:.

thank you!!!

i've known about the 35/30 for 15+/- years, but i never sent it to JES. i always thought that if i would have the money, then i would send it. but.........another new rifle or new revolver, money was tight, repairing the truck, kids.......you know, life stuff.

sending it to JES was the best thing i have done!!! i have killed two does(20-25 yards) and one 4pt(50ish yards) with 200gr rcbs fn gc and 2400/tuft of dacron going 1726fps. 20-25 yards is the most they go after the shot. the buck went about 10ish + yards. all were shot behind the shoulder. its a great feeling i get when i'm limping thru the woods to my ground blind.

---I am Blessed enough to own some larger bored rifles, & there's something about going on a hunt, even if it's out your back door carrying a rifle you had a hand at making changes, putting it the way you want it. Establishing the ammo to your own custom load. Finally getting to smell the powder burn & see the results may they be accomplishments, failures, or adjustments needed. Being fed from the trough of hands on experience.

Great outcome on your hunt.
The 35s just make such a fine cast bullet shooter for deer or wild hog hunting. I use the RCBS 200 Silhouette FP plain base powder coated. I use them on the farm in an AR-15 with the 358 MGP, the 35 Whelen in the Rem 700 and in the Mauser with the 350 Rem Mag.
I have found that expansion is really not even a consideration, on a deer or hog, the 35 with a 200 hits so hard that the transfer of energy is all it takes with a well placed shot, behind the shoulder or in the neck. DRT
