I don't like to post things just to toot my own horn, but I do want to post this in thanks to the countless members here who provide knowledge and experience in every aspect of shooting and hunting. If not for this crowd, I'd likely live my life in the hapless bliss of 12 gauge Sluggers and 30-06 Core-Lokts.

That said, I took this doe with a good old 370 grain maxi-ball cast from dead soft water main joints and lubed with crisco. That was loaded over about 90 grains of screened home made black powder. Fired from a Knight LK-II that I've taken out every season I could for the last 15 years. I took a chance with this being a 125 yard shot - I knew the accuracy would reasonable, but I didn't know how that boolit would perform.

As the smoke cleared, I watched her trot off and my heart sort of sank. As I got to the location, there was very obvious blood and I felt much better. I had to follow 80 yards of blood painting everything before I found her piled up.

This was the first deer I've gotten with a muzzleloader, and the second I've taken with one of my own boolits. Now that I've also picked up a 357 mag Henry and 358 Win Savage, I'm hoping for many more years of success with my own lead thanks to the information that circulates around here.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211201/ab3f0e9c539f4e3bd80666e433be98b5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211201/8827d31eca66710394bfd470f55a33fb.jpg

Good shooting and great that it’s your boolit and powder. I have taken three now by similar ML load and all were. DRT

Cast maxi-ball and home made black powder! I think that is quite an accomplishment! Congrats on a well executed plan!

Congratulations! My hats off to all you guys who make your own BP and especially for a good score like that with it.

Congratulations on the good shot, good harvest, and having done it yourself! No idea where in WI you are, but it looks like you have about as much snow as we do over in the NW corner of the state. I'm hoping to get one with my muzzleloader this weekend and have been reading up on how to do it...it's a bridge I'll cross soon.

what a feeling when you harvest a deer with your own bullets AND homemade black powder. One notch to self sufficiency
Congrats

I just want to say thank you for all the wonderful responses! And good luck to all my fellow Sconnies heading out with your beloved front-stuffers this week! And of course anyone else still out there chasing after their local four legged ungulates.

As I alluded to earlier, I'm merely standing on the shoulders of the giants here in terms of know-how. All I had to do was spend many evenings reading, a few afternoons at the range (ok, quite a few), and get in position to squeeze the trigger.

I stumbled upon the Castboolits site in college (trying to shoot for cheap of course) and have just kept reading much of what has been posted. Early on, I managed to barely get an antelope with hardcast fired through a 30-06 at a blazing 1800 fps. That taught me that hunting and target shooting with cast are two different animals. This was the first time since then where I was reasonably confident that a hit in the appropriate spot would fill a tag.

I'm just grateful that I can benefit from the knowledge, experience, and occasional entertaining BS story from all you old geezers!

Agent, congratulations on an extremely successful hunt. With your success I am a little more pumped than I was about our upcoming muzzleloader season here which starts Dec 25. I plan to be out there with my muzzleloader. I was leaning toward a jacketed sabot, but now....

Congradulations on a fine hunt and shot. I believe harvests are better when you make your own bullets but you have taken it a step further by making your own powder. Great job. Maybe some of us can stand on your shoulders making our own powder.

Well done. I've wanted to try the world of home made black powder. Too many things to try! I'll get 'round to it (I hope.). Anyway, congratulations.
