Went back & read Sundog's article once again on the Casting Fellows page. If you've never read it, well you should. Enjoy.

The .30-06 was the first rifle caliber I casted for with a Lyman 311332 180gr. mold. That was the first step in a great adventure, I had just finished a Mauser action with a 26'' Shilen #5 barrel in .30-06 topped with a Burris 3x9 Signature scope. I had lots of IMR 4227 so that's what I went with, good thing, it took only a short time to develop a load capable of less than 1'' @ 100yds. repeatable. I don't have another mold/rifle combination that'll do as well...yet, I'm always working on it though.

My Springfield has a 4 groove Remington barrel (04/44) that was new in the grease when I had it fitted. It has a 12X Leupold scope attached and just shoos brilliantly with 31.5gns of 3031 and a Lyman 311284 sized to 0.310".

First rifle I cast for, on my own without My Dad around.

My first cast 30-06 was a Brno Arms VZ24 Mauser sporterized by Kimber with a synthetic stock & a 24 inch fluted stainless match [their words] barrel. I used the RCBS 30-180-FN & 20 grains of 2400. It was an honest inch & a half shooter. That rifle began my cast/rifle road. The rifle looked like this.

What do they say about "like minds"? I have a few '06 Military surplus shooters, and for all (EXCEPT my Garand) I remember "30-31-32": I use an even 30 grains of 3031 which I size to 0.320". I reckon -- 'specially my 1917 -- the 0.320" is not even too snug a fit, and with the moderate IMR 3031 charge pressures still stay well at acceptable levels. Mine weigh in at about 205 grains, and I use Hornady gas checks.

Very nice! What velocity do you get out of that load?

I have a Remington M700 ADL dedicated to cast. It was originally a donor action for another project so I decided to do some cast testing before spinning the barrel off. It turned out to be be a shooter and is still my dedicated cast -06. I even put it in a nice laminated stock to upgrade from the ADL plastic one. The next one will have a heavy profile barrel in a 12 or 14 twist. I’m looking forward to when I get more time to pick up where I left off with it.

It chronograghs at 1740fps. I still have to test the same boolit with powder coated ones.

Without a doubt the 30-06 is my favorite caliber for cast or jacketed bullets. I am now down to four, as I fixed each of my two kids up with a small arsenal five years ago and yes they both got some 30-06s.

Have had a number 06's and don't recall any that did not shoot cast well. Down to my last one, a CMP 03A3 in a CMP C stock and even with the origianl sights and my eyes will shoot to 2 MOA with the Lyman 311291 and 16 grs of Blue Dot. Could probably improve on that with a little load development but I'm too lazy.
