So I did a round trip to thrift stores and walked away with 4 pewter mugs and two porridge bowls. One of the porridge bowls has TD&SB on the handle. I googled it and I think I scored something made in the early 1800’s (possibly worth upwards of $400) but hoping to get some verification.

It's either the real thing or a forgery. Wouldn't be hard to make a silicon mold. If you are really interested you could take it to a GOOD antique dealer.

Thanks I will try. If it’s a forgery then in the melting pot it goes.

Can you find a Hallmark on the back side? You have a crude casting that either escaped the final polishing or was is a cheap knockoff of the product shown by Helka. If you do have an old piece, besides the potential value, the lead content not only makes it unsafe to use for food, it also changes your lead/pewter (tin) ratio.

No hallmark on the back side

But I did do a pretty extensive search on these this morning and non that I saw had any hallmarks on the bottom. Just the one on the handle. I will keep searching

I agree there appears to be a considerable quality gap between the handle on your example and the one in the picture. The overall excellent condition of the bowl doesn’t support that being wear from use either.
Certainly bears more investigation, but those flags would keep me from buying it as a collectible.

Nice find .The pewter mugs seem to be popular. I found 3 at the market I was at last Sunday but the asking price limited me to only one.

Curious why they are asking? I got them for $2-$4 each. Did I overpay?

I think you actually got a great deal. The asking price on one of the mugs I had in hand last week was $12 the other one was $9.

Hope those are actually the REAL OLD thing! Get it verified.

That is why I warn everybody in a total panic to find and melt down pewter items: be very careful! There could be some very valuable things.....FAAAAAAAR more than a few lousy pounds of pewter for casting.

I have found many hundreds of dollars worth of genuine antique pewter items over the years for just a few dollars each. Watch the markings and hallmarks.

There is a BIG thread on her about pewter makings. Search fir it and read it B4 ever melting anything down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! Trying to reach out to a few dealers. Would love it to be authentic and worth $400 but just as happy for it to be worthless and melt it.

Don't let the quality fool you. Old pewter casts can be just OK sometimes.
I will list it on eBay with what you know and see what happens.
I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about eBay, I have sold there for years.
