I know this is a long shot, but here it goes.

My 21 year old son just took a software engineering job locally (NC), but is required to train for 1 year in Rochester NY.

We have been looking online at apartments, but I have no idea which areas are best and more importantly which areas to avoid.

If anyone has any info please share it or pm me. He will be moving up in mid-December 2021.

Thanks in advance

If he will be bringing a car, look for places in the suburbs.

Where will he be doing his training?

Don't be in a rush. Rochester has already set a record for homicides earlier this month. Outgoing Mayor L. Warren is a confirmed liberal. New Mayor may not be much better.
Suburbs and commute sounds like good advice.
I am an hour south and very rural. My zip, 14572, could be described as a bedroom community for Rochester.
If he enjoys shooting sports, Monroe County the home of Rochester, has a much more progressive attitude than the surrounding, more rural counties.

Make sure he doesn't bring any hand guns or "assault rifles".

Thanks for all the help. My son was able to secure an apartment last weekend in the Brockport area. It was an enjoyable trip for both of us. We plan to make the move up journey around the first of the new year.

Welcome. I hope his time in Upstate New York goes well.
