View Full Version : Have I ruined my alloy

I have recently made another bonehead accident. I had under a half lb. of cerrosafe alloy above my loading area. Because of not using it too often. I forgot what it was (it was in a small ingot) and during a bench clean up. The ingot of cerrosafe got tossed in with my bullet rejects. I haven't gone through my pile of rejected bullets that accumulate in my casting room. But more than likely it already is mixed in with some of my alloy
My concern is what will happen to any alloy if the cerrosafe got mixed with it?

Think about the answer, cerrosafe has a low Bhn … you can determine the answer

Adding 1/2 pound would seem to do very little to a 10 pound pot?

I’d go for dilution. In a 250lb melt it’d surely become irrelevant.

I dont think it would hurt too much. Keep shooting.

cerrosafe contains cadmium, very poisonous at normal casting temps.I wouldn't use it.

It's melted when it is used to cast chambers, so I don't think the product is inherently unsafe when melted. Cadmium's boiling point is 1413 degrees, so I don't think it will get hot enough at normal casting temperatures to cause any dangerous fumes.

Myself, I wouldn't worry about it at all unless one is fastidious about exact percentages of their alloys.
