My wife and I spent a lot of time with this young man as a baby up until he started school, then between split custody and 2 sets of real grandparents, and long distance limited his visits with us.
Sadly his mother passed away this year, and he has had a pretty rough time. She was a great lady who made sure he could get a couple of visits in with us when possible.
We have had him over a couple weekends recently, and my own Grandson and I put him on a crash course on shooting at our range here at the house, he loved shooting and took to like a duck to water.
We started him on 22s and worked on up, rifles and pistols.
A couple of bricks of 22s, then started on larger rifle cals. in short time he was wearing out my 8 inch 250 yard gong with my grandsons 7.62x39 AR.
His dad got him to the required hunter safety course and we were ready for hunting season.
We never got a chance at a shooter deer for him but we did manage this hog, about 90 yards perfect shot, ran about 40 yards in thick woods so was able to give him a good blood trailing lesson to boot.291741

Wow!! Very nice, congrats to the young hunter. With grandparents like you, I'd say he is off to a good start

He'll remember that hog from now on! I've got some honorary grandkids, too. They are a hoot.
Ok, what caliber is that bolt gun?

Good shooting young man. Don't worry that deer you want isn't all that far away. Now it's just a matter of time.

Funny you bring this up, I bought that rifle used from a family member just because it was a to good a deal to pass up.
I thought make a good box blind gun, I remember when it was released the gun rags were hyping it up mild recoil kills like the hammer of thor blah-blah well you know what? for once they were right.
Ive shot many deer and hogs with mostly 270-30-06- 7mags and I honestly cant tell the difference.
After shooting this one, I bought 1 for each of my grandkids for their first "very own rifles" shot this hog with a hornady sst exited hog with a quarter sized exit hole.

Something all us old geezers need to remember. If we don't teach the next generation of hunters, hunting will die out when we do. And if we're honest, most of us don't have that long left.

You so right same as fishing and trapping. Also this hobby of casting and reloading.
