No. 12 shot

Stopped in the LGS and found some #12 shot. It is a consignment shop. Bag is marked 12. Almost 9.5 lbs.

Got it home and took a closer look and it looked off. Put a magnet to it and it is steel. Anyone know of a use for this stuff? Other than to play with a magnet?

Go ahead and make some shot shells and try 'em.

Steel pellets slow down faster than the same size pellet made of Lead.
Some places prohibit Lead shot for certain kinds of hunting.

If you can't use them, do what the guy you got them from did---- sell 'em.

I figured I would load some in the Speer capsules and see what they do.

I wouldn't shoot steel shot through any barrel with rifling in it.

I would think that the plastic capsule would protect the barrel. Although I am Leary of it.

If you are loading a 44Spec/Mag you could use 410 wads to protect your bore from the steel shot.
Cut them to length as needed.

Fired thru a rifled bore, the shot cup would spin and spread the pattern way out. Outpost75's loads were for smoothbores, particularly the old Stevens 101 mini-shotgun.

Something interesting to try might be to load some in a shot shell with a small neodymium magnet in the center of the shot. Be interesting to see what happens with the pattern.

Try at your own risk. I know nothing about shot shell reloading.

I decided to return it. While there found about 25 lbs. more of it. Just didn't want to take the chance.

I think being that small it would be a real pain to get off the brass. With the SS pins a tap on a towel will remove them.

It may have been meant for an industrial shot peening application. I remember when the contractors were blasting nonskid off the weather decks they used #6 or 7 iron shot.

No way would I put it through a rifled bore.

Interesting:
I've seen some of those new age magnets about strong enough to hold a cat up on the refrigerator,
but at shot gun speeds, I think pellets not on the front or back end of the magnet would strip off right outside the barrel.
A pattern might be tighter, but I wouldn't think it'd be by much.

It is maybe ment for non lead loading . But that is really small shot for use for hunting and I would not use it in my rifle barrel . Steel is different then lead and my 10ga, I had a gun smith bore it out to use steel shot when they change the law to use it for waterfowl. Other wise the steel would beat up the barrel. You did the right thing to return it . Like was stated that it would give a problem with rust .

Don't shoot it out of a rifled bore. As other posters have said, it's hardened steel shot used for industrial cleaning.

Put the magnet in a closed bag.
The shot will stick to the outside.
Then just pull out the magnet and the shot falls off.

I know this is an old thread, but you could put the #12 steel shot into a brass jacket and swage it into a frangible bullet. Should work great for that. Sort of similar to the Glaser Safety Slug, only steel instead of lead
