With meplat smaller than diameter of large pistol primer is unsafe for tube magazine rifle use, if that is your intent. For game shooting meplat should not be smaller than 0.6 of the bullet diameter.

It would be for a SAA if I were to go with it at all. I just would like to know when/why it was designed.

Not sure, but shape resembles factory bullet for .44 Russian or .44 Bulldog

Tom designs A LOT of molds around what customers ideas are. . .there very well might not be a rhyme or reason behind it other than someone just thought it would be a good idea??? I do agree with the above though. . .44-40 plinking/target bullet - NOT a hunting bullet.

I wouldn't guess at 44-40. Nominal bullet diameter for 44-40 is .427" and mold is designated at .430". Normally molds are not made .003" over nominal billet diameter. But in real life sizing down .003" is no big deal...

Modern .44-40 rifles and revolvers by Uberti. Pietta, Ruger. Gen3 Colts, Marlins and Rossi all use barrels of the same dimensions as the .44 Magnum and usually run .430 groove diameter or larger.

Older pre-WW2 guns may also run large. I've seen original 1873 Winchesters as large as .435"

Yup. A slightly heaver slug over the "standard" 200gr bullet for the 44-40. The .18 meplat is not a problem in a tubular magazine with this caliber. They are not real recoil generators anyway. One would have to check to see if the .375" nose length will not bee too long for the 1.60" action restriction on the lever action rifles like the Win M92.
