View Full Version : What's a good .355/356 Boolite for an AR-9?

So I traded some ammo for a nice AR-9 with a 16 inch barrel the lower was a Other lower so I can also make it a pistol. So I'm looking for advice on what weight and Boolite would be best? If I go pistol I'm looking at a 10.5 inch barrel. This is unsuppressed both barrels.

Like to hear some advice on this as I don't really know much about 9mm other than it worked like *hit in Iraq with the 115gr. Told that the 16" barrel males it a much more efficient. Thanks for the help and advice!

If you load it with power pistol or blue dot you can get 357 Magnum or 357 Sig velocities with excellent accuracy past 50 yards.

I haven’t tried it in a longer barrel, but it’s hard to imagine that with the small case capacity the extra barrel length will be helpful. i have several with 5” - 8” barrels, all suppressed pistols, and run a coated 147gr pr 158gr bullet over (mostly) titegroup. Not the right combo for max power.

124s with Power Pistol will get 1450 fps range. Most 9mm ARs are 1:10 twist so they would need a hard bullet or a gas check for great accuracy and no leading. My Camp 9 does great with the Ranch Dog 135-RF gas checked with a full charge of Power Pistol for 1350 fps range. 10 shots under an inch at 50 yards and 10 shots 2.5" at 100. The groups open up at 100 with the low ballistic coefficient. A 5 mph cross breeze is a few inches at that range. I killed one deer with that load; a decent sized doe, probably 120 pounds live weight. Bullet entered through scapula and exited through opposite humerus, taking a 1" chunk of bone with it on the exit side. Deer splayed its legs trying to stay upright and I watched it wobble for a few seconds before I sent another one through the lungs.

My Camp 9 also does great with the Lee TL-124-RN cast at least 4% antimony and water dropped with a medium load of Power Pistol. 10 shots in an inch at 50 yards, 2 inches or so at 100. This bullet blows around in the wind much less than the Ranch Dog. My longest shot on a critter ever was with that bullet in my Camp 9. I have a 1-4x AR scope on it with drop lines. The 600 yard drop line roughly corresponds with 200 yards in the 9mm. I was in SD pheasant hunting and we came on a prairie dog town. I judged some of the closer ones to be 220 yards away and 10 mph cross breeze. I held a little above the bottom drop line and held for wind and tagged a dog on the first shot!

I use a 115 grain boolit over 4 grains of titegroup. Shoot them from my Ruger PC carbine. My shooting range is maximum 80 yards. No problem hitting those targets.

I'd try a LEE 120 TC myself. This is at Midway USA but you should be able to find it elsewhere. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1010201652?pid=294531
