View Full Version : Educate me on hull skiving for roll crimp

Having only star-crimped for 12ga so far, I never heard of skiving. Now that I looked into reloading for 410, I realized that some skive their virgin hulls for roll crimp whereas others do not. What are pros and cons of skiving?

Normally there's no need for skivered hulls - at least not in the larger gauges.
Since the wall thickness is pretty much the same in all gauges, the small diameter of the 410 is probably making it more difficult to form a good crimp, hence the skivering.
(I only reload 12 gauge, so I'm only guessing here)

I agree. I've roll crimped 12 Ga. unskived hulls without a problem. These were originally Federal factory buckshot loads.

As for .410, you can buy them either way. I think it's worth the few extra bucks to get one of the rolling tools that has more than one pin. The tool used on these had one pin, and although the crimp is adequate the job would probably look better with a multi-pin tool. Skiving or thinning the ends of the hulls will probably result in shorter life for multiple reloadings. These were new unloaded Cheddite hulls.

That's a toughie, because you're in Canada, and I don't know about import duty and such. But, if you go to www.ballisticproducts.com then click on shotgun reloading, then on tools, you'll find one for $29.99.

Skived are for folding crimps The op has it backwards. Rolls crimp better un-skived.
