Curious to know what it is on an original loading.

The original loading was 40 gr. black powder with a 200 gr. cast round flat nose bullet. The meplat appears to be about a little over half the width of the bullet. The info on line doesn't give the meplat. It does show a picture of the loaded round.

The meplat on my Lyman 427-098 measures roughly .20, as near as I can measure. Might be a tad larger, but my micrometer won't measure that curve very well.

Meplat of original BP factory bullets measure 0.255-0.260 diameter on optical comparator projecting to intersections of lines.

Accurate 43-215C bullet of John Kort design is the very best for black powder use and most popular with 159 blocks sold:

I finally found it! The meplat is .250"
All I did was ask for Meplat for the original bullet for the 44-40 cartridge.

Arsenals 432-210 mold is a pretty good match for the meplat and nose contour of the original. 44 wcf and it's got a great grease groove for bp lube or smokeless. I get nice groups with it using 8.3grs of unique in my win 92 src and rem rolling block.

I think the issue is more than one company made ammo & bullets back in the day, just as they do now. So which original bullet would be the precise question? The Lyman mold is a pretty good copy of an original.
