1985 GBL JM marlin in 45-70. 330gr Gould over 49 grains of varget, alloy was 20-1. Shot was broadside at 40ish yards, recovered the slug against the far side hide. Awesome performance out from the HP, I find it interesting you can see the grains of varget imprinted on the base of the recovered boolit.

Isn't it great when you recover one of your slugs. Nice buck congrats!

Wonderful success. With a soft alloy and close range that is performance I would expect. Enough Tin to hold it all together in a near perfect mushroom. Yes, those granules pressed into the base with the initial pressure before igniting themselves.

I do love recovering the slug, but also like to have two holes for tracking purposes. Hard to have both I guess. This is the fourth Gould slug I have recovered from a deer, but the first one that has not sheared some of its skirt or become very deformed. I should likely slow it down a little, but it is so accurate and performs so dang well, it is hard to mess with. Simmering the skull for a euro mount and butchering now...

congrats!!!!!!!

all of my deer were thru and thru. the 30-40 krag(165gr rd at 1926fps, 35/30(200gr fn gc at 1720fps), 9.3x57(275gr wfn gc at i forgot the chrony) and the 444(255 gr keith type, 275gr ranch dog, 280gr lfn & wfn gc and the 300gr fn gc it goes from 1600-2200fps). from coww and some tin to lyman #2 with some tin (12ish - 15ish bhn), everyone of them were thru n thru.

Instead of slowing it down, reducing the lead component of the alloy should give you less expansion. Maybe a 16:1 alloy?

Very nice buck BTW!!!

Nice buck Ateam! I've put more game in the freezer with the .45/70 than anything else. I had the same stippling effect on the base, even when I used paper patched bullets.

It's a great sensation to kill deer with your own home made ammo.

I've killed a few with cast in .30-06 and .45-70---- I didn't harvest them though,
I waited patiently, and when they walked by, I shot & killed 'em.

Not until I got it back to camp. I was hunting with 4 buddies who were all high fives and hell yeahs. One of them shot a 9 point that morning that was significantly bigger than my 8. Meat in camp and high spirits.
