Traded into a new to me JM Marlin 1895!

I had eyed a 1895 Marlin, JM vintage at my LGS. The actions was slick as slobber, blue and wood about 95% or better, you really had to nit pick it to find the slightest thing wrong with it, one owner, who I know, who took great care of it. He had traded it in in a impulse buy. It had sat there 3 weeks, and no takers, because no one could find ammo, online, or anywhere else, including the owner. I offered him a slick 141 Remington ,.35 Remington caliber, that had a Redfield peep sight. Blue was 85%, just thinning slightly from age, with a great bore. He said I cant get ammo in that caliber, to which I replied by placing 2 boxes of Federal 200gr Roundnose, on the counter. I said that will sell a lot faster with 2 boxes of ammo, than that 45/70 with nothing to run thru it, and It will be here long after deer season. So I exited the store with the 45/70. Got it home and shot some 350gr cast with 15 grns of Unique, and had to move the rear sight up 2 steps on the elevator, spot on at 140 yds, and put 3 shots into 3" leaning against a post for a rest. This one may have found it a home, as it is one of the slickest working 1895's I have run across in years, and has a sweet looking stock, with layers of grain that look like different colors of caramel.

A fine gun in a classic and useful caliber. You will be keeping it for a long time.

Those are really classy rifles. I got my first one in 1972. First load was a cast Lyman 457122HP over 16 grains Unique and it would explode a running jack rabbit.

Located another many years later and have wanted to rebarrel it to 40-65 with a groove diameter of 0.408 to 0.410, so I could use revolver bullets if I wanted. I think, with 250 grain cast slugs, it would make a fine Texas Hill Country whitetail rifle.

i would have kept the 35 rem pump and bought the marlin 95.

I bought mine in'09 .put a Williams Foolproof on it. last time I shot it off the bench I was hitting 1 1/2" orange target stickers at 75 yards. not as strong as an 86 but the 95 is light enough to carry all day.

I shoot a Lyman 350 grain and about 15 grains of unique in my 1895 sporter ( 22”, 2/3 mag. tube and pistol grip). Wonderful do all load that’s not to hard on shoulder.

I got my first cast boolit buck with the cousin to your 1895 last week! Mine is a GBL but otherwise identical, good trade!

That is a pretty 1895. Hope it shoots as good as it looks for you.

Having owned one in the past, they are a lot more fun with near factory level loads than when loaded up to the potential of the Marlin. And unless you are going after something that weighs 6-700 pounds or can bite back, more than factory levels aren't really needed.

Was on a .45-70 kick years ago and had an 1895 too along with a Navy Arms Rolling Block. Traded them both for a Ruger No1V in .25-06. One classic for another. Nice rifle. Now my 45-70 is a Cimarron .45-60 1876 NWMP Carbine.

I never was a big fan of centerfire pumps.

I'd have done that deal too, and like the guy in 'Dances With Wolves' would say---- "Good trade".

I like pumps and have a 25 Rem in a 141 which they say was only done for a short time but value for value you did rather well on that one!
