Just a while back I picked up a used Winchester Legendary Frontiersman in 38-55. I’ve since picked up a Lee 250 RF mold for it and have been working on load development for some time now. 10.0 grs Unique so far is showing the best promise with a velocity of 1285 FPS. Boolits powder coated as cast. Bore slugs at .379 Boolits .384. I don’t have a sizer for it yet.

I shot this first group today at 100 yards with iron sights. It’s pure COWW. I was pretty happy with that.

Then I shot this! It’s 1/3 COWW and 2/3 pure lead. Very happy with that. Next time out I need to move it a bit right.

I’m hoping to take it out for deer this season. Velocity and load should be OK right? I’ve never shot deer with cast to date. Wasn’t sure exactly where to post.

"Then I shot this! It’s 1/3 COWW and 1/3 pure lead." Shouldn't there be another 1/3 there somewhere?

A titch of windage and go hunting if they chamber well. That’s a good iron sight 100 yard group!

Looking for that mould. Any hints? That is an amazing 100yd group.

People are beginning to appreciate the fact that
at BP pressures/velocities, SOFT is good.

Read it again, it says 1/3 and 2/3.

That Lee boolit seems to do well from most .38-55 rifles, and at those speeds there is no need for a gas check.

A ~250 grain projectile at ~1300 fps is in the neighborhood of most .44 Magnums from a revolver, I think it should do fine on deer.

I’ve tried to up the velocity but then the rifle shoots high. So I’m good where it’s at ( based on not much).

I do have a Marlin JM 44 mag that needs to get used for other than paper/steel punching as well. Next project I guess.
