At what point should a person consider using Linotype bullets with a gas check in a 30 cal rifle?
Also at what point should that person consider dropping down from Linotype to a softer alloy,

I am asking for a friend loading for a 303 enfield.

If you start skipping lands or skids in the barrel. You will see the signs on a recovered bullet. On the recovered bullet you wouldnt have nice sharp grooves.

For my 303 loading ... 1942 No 4 MK I BSA ... I use 50-50 mix of clip on wheel weights / soft lead air cooled and gas checked , sized .313 . The bore measures .312 and the throat is not oversized .
I Keep all CB loads from 1600 to 1850 fps ... faster velocities might require harder boolit but the 50-50 blend works in this rifles good tight barrel .
This rifle was made at the BSA plant and is number 490 ... maybe the tooling was new and not worn and sloppy... I was shocked at the .312 barrel measurement ... I checked it 3 times ...
.303 bore + .0045 land + .0045 land = .312 ! And that math don't lie .
And don't let anyone tell you measuring a barrel with 5 grooves isn't hard ... but I knew an old trick from the good old days !

I use a mix of 12-14 hardness for high power rifle and 44M loads and then PC everything. PC eliminates the leading, the grease, the smoke and allows you to shoot softer lead. Try it you will like it!
