So this year I picked up a Henry single shot .357 mag rifle. I thought it had nice wood. Went out to one of my local haunts for a doe and found a small 4x4 mule deer buck instead. Couldn't pass up a 100 yard shot. First shot was at 109 yards and got both lungs, it took a few steps and I reloaded and shot again, center punched the heart at 120 yards. 162grn Cast G/C swc, 14.5grns IMR 4227, for about 1500fps.

Not only nice but outstanding with iron sights. Would like to hear more about your zero yardage as well as "legendhunter"s question. Is your sight set up with a bead front or post? Proof you don't need 2000+ fps.
Great job!

I could tell the first shot was good. The deer acted confused and wasn't moving very fast, but at 100 yards, with a 357 carbine on a lung shot. I thought he may walk a bit further than I would like and the second shot was a nice broadside. I figured I didn't have much to lose putting another in him. Heart shot seemed to have dumped him in short order. He would have gone down from the lung hit, but with the lack of energy, it would be like an archery shot and he could have gone a ways and may not have presented me with a clean follow up at that point.

Dang nice buck, and purty rifle as well. I have been looking for the same .357 for over a year, and can not find one that is decent priced. Good job all the way around, fine eating right there.

I'm sighted in dead on at 100, bead front sight. I'm holding on target not apple on post/6 o'clock. I don't feel great taking shots much over 100 yards with a 357 carbine, so I didn't feel I needed to sight in high. Brass bead on chest, and fire. First shot was slightly quartering away at 109 yards. I heard the "thunk" and the deer hunched up and started walking away kinda wobbly and confused. I knew the shot broke clean and he was hit well. He stopped at 120 yards and was looking rough, but was completely broadside. I figured there was no harm in a finisher, so I put the bead on the chest again. I was aiming mid chest and it connected a few inches low and center punched the heart. He tipped over instantly into some juniper bushes. First shot broke a rib on the on side, punctured both lungs and exited a rib on the off side. Second shot broke onside rib right in the armpit area and exited the same spot missing the rib on the off side. Cleanly centering the heart. If you zoom into the attached pic, you can see the bullet hole in front of my finger.

Sweet, I've taken a few with my .357 with 175 gr flat point gc and it did the job just fine.

Again good shooting. If a man knows his dope with a bead sight that is a deadly and fast combination. Also good to see the results and know the boolit speeds. Good REAL world information, thanks for posting and the Q&A.

My pleasure. I was confident I could put shots on target from 0 to 100, I wasn't super worried about 109 or 120. But I think that's my limit. Marginal hits at range would probably give me disappointing results more often than not.

I really like this little rifle. Any reason to, or not to get it made into 357 max? Part of me is scared to mess with it. And says faster with lead is pointless. But a have a bit of a credit at the gun smith....

I turned my 357 mag Handi rifle into a 357 Max. It shoots great, especially with 200 grain boolits.

I have one. Very generous throat so I seat my boolits out pretty far to support the front end of the cartridge. Very good accuracy that way. May order this mold for it. http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-300S

Inside 120 yards, a 357 mag is absolute magic on mid size game. Ive taken whitetail deer and black bear
Zero complaints and all were DRT. I use a 158 grain JSP pushed by a full house load of Lil Gun. My son likes the 190.grain Ranch Dog boolit with a max load of H110.
