Anyone using 4198 in .30-06?

At the gun show before last I scored 8 pounds of 4198. I grabbed it because I knew it was a traditional boolit powder.

I have a batch of Ranch Dog 173 fp boolits made up and Mrs.Thumbcocker has taken a liking to my number 1 in .30-06. I have loaded 10 each 25, 27, 29, and 31 grains for testing purposes.

Any input is appreciated.

4198 will make most any rifle cartridge go with cast or jacketed. I've used it in .222 Rem to .375h&h with good accuracy. I just ran out of 4198 with my last batch of 38-55 and it is on my shopping list ......

Not my old faithful powder for cast bullets in 30-06, but in some loads with cast bullets it shines. Like the NOE 30 caliber XCB 165 grain bullet, checked, 19 grains 4198, which has given me 1.75" groups at 100 yards. In a mil sight Springfield 03.

I really like it for cast with mid-range recipes from the Lyman book in .30-30, .308, .30-06, and min. charges for .45-70.
It, and 3031 are my favorites for them.

Old IMR data, from around 1999, list 4198 for many jacketed cartridges. But none for 6.5 Creedmoor. Easy to do a work up.

1999- 30-06 IMR 4198 , 180 gr jacketed, MAXIMUM LOAD 36.0 grs. Your 25 to 31 grs with cast should be ok?

For my 6.5 Creedmoor 140 gr jacketed Match Burners, i settled on 26 grs IMR 4198. Did work up to 30 grs max.

With 30-06 & 173 gr cast with GC, always used IMR 4895.

I load 22gr. 4198 under a LEE 170 g/c, Lyman 173 G/C, LEE 185 G/C or NOE 202gr. G/C for about 1500 FPS.
No Fillers Ever.
Works great for Steel Silhouette to 300 yards.
Accuracy is Sub MOA from a 1903A3 and Mauser in 30-06.
Also load it in the 30-30's, 19gr. under a Lyman 173 G/C for about 1650 FPS and close to MOA accuracy.
Load it in the 45/70 with a Barnes 300gr. TSX for Sub MOA in the 1895 Guide gun.
Also in the 7.62X39, 24gr. under a Nosler 123gr. Lead Free for MOA

That 8lb jug of 4198 is useless in the .30-06. It will just cause you no end of frustration.

So, just package it up and send it to me. I'll even pay postage. ;) :)

It is my preferred powder for cast in the .308. Don't shoot the Garand as much, but, it does work. The .308 likes around 24gn of powder with either the 210gn or 165gn bullets. The Garand likes a little more. It can be position sensitive depending on how much free space you have so if you have larger groups you might try a bit of filler. I only paper shoot so I just 'wiggle' the gun on the bench a bit to make sure the powder is laying flat in the case. As long as it is the same every time I get sd of less than 10fps and es of 20fps.

28g of 4198 behind a 175g Lyman 041 has been a solid midrange load in my '16 R700 CDL 30-06.

So much that,was going to shoot a group or 2 yesterday and post up a pic. Heavy,20-40 mph winds made even going outside a risk,and didn't send any as it would be just wasting components. Will try again today.

Shopdog I use the same load but with 168 gr bullets in my model 70, unless they quit making it I doubt I'll ever change
