Which brand thermometer to buy? RCBS or Lyman?

There is only about a $10 difference.

Any experiences on quality, accuracy, reliability, or warranties?

Try Tru- Temp in NY. They will make you one out of stainless for $35. Your choice of lengths

The cheapest one you can find. It's just a reference tool.

I have had the Lyman for all of three days now and have used it.

I like it a lot... which leads me possibly to start my own thread.

I'll go do a search first.

I had a Lyman. Sent it back. It went up to 700 while I was ladle casting and
never moved after that. Stayed at 700 even after pot cooled.
Now I just pay attention to mold/bullets and adjust off of them.

FWIW I bought one from Brownell's years ago. It finally went bad and I inquired about where to send it for repair. They sent me a new one at no charge!

Not expected for sure but I definitely prefer to do business with a place like them.

I got an RCBS and I have been happy with it.

Based on the experience from seasoned casters, I went with the RCBS. This has since been verified on some of the casting forum threads. More often than not, the Lyman version is prone to trouble, with lousy customer service resolve.

I have never had problems with the RCBS thermometer. Whenever I have had problems with other RCBS products, the customer service is exceptional.

The antimonyman.com has an excellent thermometer on it for sale. I've used it several years now and am extremely happy.

I like my RCBS, but would try one sold by "The Antimony Man" Bill Furguson. I have heard that the Lyman units fail often, but maybe they just had a bad batch.

I am using a PID controller which was initially intended for controlling temperature in a smoker. Works perfect and the best is that it does not only shows the temperature but actually controls it within a few degrees. The thermocouple is good for up to 2000 Fahrenheit which I will for sure not reach.... Here the instructions how to build it and where to get the parts: http://www.susanminor.org/forums/showthread.php?t=315 . Its is slightly more expensive but works great for me.
