Soft Lino type.

Buddy used his Saeco Hardness tester on some of my boolits made from Lino. The reading he got was below what Lino should be. I am guessing it needs tin or antimony, Which is more likely?

FWIW Dept..........Just melted down a few 40+ pound ingots of linotype yesterday into manageable 5# ingots. I got a BNH of 23 on my tester.

What was the source of your "lino"?

Did it come to you in type form or ingots?

Two points to consider with lino.

1) The spacers are not lino so if you batch the spacers and there is LOTS of them the cast will measure light on BHN.

2) Lino is smelted and re smelted and re re smelted. If your lino has had a hard life and not been 'sweetened' (antimony/tin added) you could have a soft batch. Of course this is why it was replaced to begin with.

Would anyone let me send you a few boolits to test? His tester was a saeco it would be nice to double check it with one that reads in BHN.

I have had spacers that crack when bent, maybe not quit as hard as Lino but dang near it.
Also your lino maybe will harden with a little time... Did you measure right after smelting it?
