I slugged my Pietta 62 Police..ish barrel, and it measures 0.366". I was thinking of getting a conversion cylinder. Does anyone offer a conversion chambered in a cartridge that has a bullet a bit closer to that diameter? I don't see 38 Special being all that accurate with that groove diameter.

.38 S&W has a larger Boolits diameter than the .38 Special

This is a place where a HBWC pays off .

38 S&W/short/NP/38-200 has an expected dia of .361 .
9×18 Makrov aka 9mm Mak is expected to be .365 .

Best bet is get a common cylinder adjust it as needed fire form and neck size with a suitable bullet .....it functionally be comes a wildcat . I'm the guy with a 45 Colts with a .494 chamber hooked to a .450 groove .

I'm thinking of trying 38 Special with heeled bullets, if I can find the right mould.

Jim that gets you into 38 long Colts I think . I have a Lyman 375?? mould , it's an RB and conical PB for a 36 cal ....... I haven't cast it yet and to be honest hadn't thought about it but dead soft might be exactly what you want .

Yes, 38 Colt is what you want with it's heeled bullet and straight through bored cylinder.

The Cast Bullet Association had a recent article, Hollow Base Wad Cutters worked very well in their tests.

Bullets in factory .38 S&W loads are typically .359-.360" diameter with only a shallow cupped base, which may or may not slug-up to fit the oversized barrel. Factory .38 Long Colt loads have a deep hollow base like .38 Special wadcutters and shoot well in my Pietta Navy with Howell .38 Special conversion cylinder. Factory .38 Special HBWCs also shoot well. If casting your own several mold makers offer a heeled bullet with oversized front band to fit the oversized cylinder throats and barrels on these.

Hello jimkim,

You might want to look at Accurate Molds.

He will alter any dimension you wish.

I'm planning on using a LEE 375-130-1R, the Black Powder mold & I will swage the heel.
I do this with the 44 Colt and they shoot very good, soft lead only.
