I bought a really nice 40-70 wcf at the Colorado Gun Collectors Show a few months back. Half round ,half magazine, special order gun. I know that it is basically a 40-82 with a steeper twist barrel to stabilize the longer/heavier 330 grain bullet that it shoots. Yes it uses the 2.4" 45-90 case like the 40-82 but that is where the similarity ends. Others have stated that they just fire their 40-82's in their 40-70's. Well, they will not chamber in this rifle and I shoot four 40-82's. The shoulder is drastically different in the two cartridges along with neck length. Maybe there is something wrong with my 40-70 IDK yet and I have not been able to find any reloading dies for that caliber. Anyone else enjoyed a 40-70wcf and have any thoughts on this matter? Thanks for looking. Dr.C

Sounds like it is time for a chamber cast to make sure what the inside looks like.

That is going to happen next if I cannot find some dies or factory ammo. Thanks

Following, I've had an 1886 and a Marlin in 40-70 that I've used 40-82 brass in successfully.

I was hoping to be able to do that and fireform brass then reload but 40-82 brass lacks 3/8" chambering in the 40-70. Dr.c
