Folks,

Which stock production vehicle with an interior currently available in the US has the greatest range? (I'm thinking it may be a hybrid.) Let me know.

Enquiring minds . . .

My Ford Escape can do ~450 miles on a tank if I keep my lead foot under control... which never happens, to much fun when the turbo spools up and it scoots.

Do they still make Honda 50 motor bikes ... the Honda Thrifty Fifty got 225 MPG .
Your post said "vehicle" and they are vehicles .
My Honda 50 held 4 gallons @ 225 mpg = 900 mile range ...

The Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0L Duramax 6 cylinder inline is doing over 30 MPG and it has a 28.3 gallon tank so that about 849 miles at 30 mpg. A buddy has one in he is getting 32 to 34 on the highway doing 75 mph so that would put him at 934 miles at 33 mpg.

Butzbach, this is one of the most straightforward, and well communicated questions I've seen, and the answer is straightforward too. I don't understand why so many here have completely failed.

As has been pointed out by some, I actually believe a truck is going to offer the longest range. I do not know which one, but tank size is going to be a huge factor, and trucks can carry way more gas than cars can.

my truck will make it from limon colorado to wichita kansas on one tank of fuel, my little car it takes 2.5 fill ups to do the same. the truck holds 50 gallons the car about 10 so the car is actually cheeper but the truck has better range.

I can get close to 600 miles on my Subaru legacy if I keep it 65 and under and keep it all highway miles. I usually fill it up around 550. No sense in taking chances.

My 1995 Dodge 2500 2WD with 12V Cummins diesel and 5 speed trans will get 25MPG on the highway if you keep to the right lane. It has a 35 gallon tank and will take you 875 miles if you run it on fumes.

Pretty good but you cannot drive over 60-65. Push 70-75 so the RPM climbs and mileage falls to pieces. Note the national speed limit was still in place when the truck was produced so it is geared accordingly.

25 years ago, I had an older acquaintence in Eastern Ky, who had a daughter in Seattle, and a pretty fair Cadillac. His business partner said, when it was vacation time, he would typically call the first night out from the Minneapolis-St Paul area. The next night, his call would come from Seattle. Gas mileage and tank size aren't the only factors. Wow doesn't describe it!
Probably a 20 hour day, and very straight roads, and a driving skill that was learned pushing Cadillac ambulances way past their limits on Eastern Ky roads in the 1950's and 60's.

Yup! Filled up in Manchester, IA yesterday (@$2.99/gal.), drove my 2019 CrossTrek back here, and still have well over a half-tank left on the gauge (16.5 gal. tank). Dashboard readout indicates slightly over 40 mpg. Realistically, I routinely get right around 500 miles to the tankfull in 'everyday driving' mode.

My diesel pickup has enough range if you drive it empty that it's almost unbearable to run it from F to E in terms of the number of hours you can go. I can only imagine if it was 2wd and got even better than the 18-19 mpg it can get on flat ground unloaded, that it'd be even worse. I find it hard to believe any car, hybrid or not, can hang with 650+ miles of range.

Run a line from the 8,000 gallon fuel tank and you should be able to get 50,000 miles without too much effort.

Not as helpful as usual here but still an interesting thread. I was just musing about how confounded the government might be by citizens with 1000 mi + autos stashed while the majority were putting around in electric golf carts with 300 mi max ranges and seven hour recharge times.

1. 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid: 702 miles

This compact hatchback doesn’t look special, but the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid can go an incredible 702 miles before you need to refuel it. That’s if you choose its base Blue trim level, which gets an EPA-estimated 58 mpg in the city, 60 mpg on the highway, and 59 mpg combined — also the best efficiency of any car on the market that doesn’t need to plug in. Other trim levels manage still-outstanding ratings of 54 mpg city, 56 mpg highway, and 55 mpg combined; with an 11.9-gallon gas tank, that’s good for 654 miles.

The Ioniq is priced from $23,400 with standard features that include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, push-button starting, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This 139-horsepower hatchback is quieter, quicker, more refined, and equipped with better infotainment than its Toyota Prius archrival. However, its rear seat and cargo hold — while looking great on paper — feel less generous in person.

There are people doing the cannonball run (coast to coast race) who gut their car, add fuel cells and make the 2,800 mile trip in 26 hours without stopping.

That's pretty impressive. Our Camry Hybrid at work has nowhere near that.

I'm pretty sure a Diesel Jetta, at least the older ones, could do 800+ miles on a tank.

Electric cars will improve. I'll let others support their development.

In 1921, an electric car had a range of about 75 miles. 2021, they claim 300, but in reality is closer to 250. So at this rate, maybe in another 75 years we will have produced a practical all-electric battery driven car.

Personally if it weren't for cost, I think steam power cars offer the most interesting history and practicality. For example, a 1924 Doble steam power car could run 1,500 miles before it needed the water tank refilled! On top of that, the brick shaped car could do 120 mph with an acceleration that is plenty impressive even today. Only drawback I know of is they sold for what is about $150,000 today.

10-15-2021, 11:08 PM
The sad reality is that all electric cars do at this time, is move the source of the pollution to a central location. A few hundred nuclear power plants could probably make electric transportation possible. In the mean time I think a small ICE to charge the batteries while you are at work, or shopping would be ideal.

That is under ideal circumstances. Actual testing indicates 20 degree temps reduce range by 41% and zero temps about 60%. Mpls junked it's 500 million dollars worth of electric buses for this reason. Same for hot weather and AC usage.

Some of the newer Ford diesels F350s have a 48 gallon tank. If you drove 65-70 you would average at least 20 mpg. That ends up at 960 miles.

I drive a lot faster than that and still get a little over 20 mpg when driving on the highway (2020 F250 6.7 Powerstroke). Unfortunately, with my "shorter" bed I only have a 34 gallon tank. But 600 miles between fill-ups is easy without getting too close to empty (although a don't let the tank get below 1/4 usually).

Pulling a trailer is a different story and I sure wish I had that 48 gallon tank. That large tank is only available in crew cab long bed models which were not available when we went truck shopping.

My 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is averaging just under 26 MPG.

With the 36 gallon tank that comes out to 936 theoretical miles. More than I want to do in one sitting. Rarely do I let it get much below 1/2 a tank.

They'd put me in jail for putting a spike through the gas pump speaker if I had to listen to the nattering nabobs of stupidity on "gas station TV".

There is a special place in that warm spot reserved just for people who invent things like that.

And I ain't talkin' Jamaica.
