View Full Version : 20:1 for hp at .44 mag velocity?

I have the MP clone of the Lyman devestator boolit. For hunting I have pretty much used acww or wdww. I am thinking about trying the hp cast of 20:1 in my .44 magnum this year.

Any thoughts on this combination? My hunting loads run in the 1300 fps. range. Most if my shots are 30 to 60 yards.

MP 432-640, deep HP, 253grs, 20:1 alloy.

Yellow - 1250fps impact velocity
Blue -850-900fps
No fragmentation

I run 20:1 for .32-30, .357 and .30-30 at a lot more velocity than you will drive your .44 with no leading problems.

20-1 should be just about perfect for a 44 at 1300 FPS. I run the 432-640 at ~1250 and get great expansion without fragmentation, with the deep hollowpoint depicted above. (That is a great boolit, by the way, it was the first MP mold I bought, nearly 10 years ago now.)

My own testing shows 20:1 (my preferred) is good for 1250/1300 fps. Larger HP slight less a d smaller slightly higher velocity.

It doesn't get any better than that.

The 20/1 alloy also works great in hollowpoint molds even at 45ACP velocities, as long as the range isn't pushed too far.

I’m trying 16:1 pure and pewter out if my 77\44 at 1600 FPS this year with a devastator. Bh is 7.8. If you look at the photos on home page you can see the expansion i had testing through water bottles. They look like flat pennies. Water is WAY harder than a deer so I’m sure they will expand violently and still hold together dumping a lot of energy and making a good sized exit hole. Tried the devastator a few years back at 15.4BH on deer at 1750fps. They sailed right through like FMJs if bone isn’t hit. Bullet sized exit holes in and out of the hides. Two went over a 100 yards with double lung shot. They left little to no blood to trail. The third I dropped because I hit a rib causing it to shatter and fragment. I’m hoping the softer alloy will poke a big hole in and out. Im sure your soft alloy will make a good sized exit hole for blood trailing…if needed.

Just a reminder that adding a trace of copper will keep fragmentation down. I get mine by the welding in method.

My findings also. With a GC'd bullet I find up through 1400 fps is good with 20-1. Above that I prefer 16-1.

Should be ideal:

290325

Same mold, same 1250fps load, two alloys. 130 grain .32 flat point solid into milk jugs set at about 7-10 yards. Bullet on the right is 20-1 and took three jugs to stop.

290326

Basically the same test with a 20-1 180 grain 38-.40 flat point at roughly 1400 fps from a lever action. Four jugs as I recall.

In a hollow point with greater distance, you should be in great shape.
