Sure it can. Should be interesting. Keep us posted, will you? I'm sure momentarily someone will be along who has done it to help.

There is no reason, why you can't load it just like a 45-70, and I would use a 50-50 blend of WW and Pure. Fill a case of 3F and strike it off level, weigh it up and that is your starting charge. Don't know if this is exactly right but it seemed to work well for my 45-70.

Just remember to use black powder lube and you should be OK. The 444 is not realy much different in case dimentions from many old black powder rounds and should work just fine. Actually I have thought of doing the same thing for a fun project but have never gotten around to it.

............If you load it with BP you can't call it a .444 Marlin anymore. You'll have to call it the 43-56-370, 10.9x57, or maybe 11x57. Calling it the 444 just don't make it with BP :-)

I would just opt for calling it a 44-60, as I am sure you can probably squeeze 60 gr of the Holy Black in it.

Interesting! Now I have a Numrich Arms full oct barrel scratched for a roller chamberd in 44/60.
I am glad I got a 44/60 cuz I dont like the 444's very much.
Now I jest need a roller action to hang it on.

You might want to try 2F if you can get your hands on some. It will be a mite slower and not work on the shoulder so much. If you have the Marlin, cleanup is easy as you just remove the lever screw and out comes the bolt. Now you clean from the breech. Should be a fun project, keep us informed.

Just found this thread...........

I had an 1893 Marlin in 38-55 that had an unusable bore. Sent the barrel off to be rebored/rerifled and chambered it to 444 (ssshhh don't tell anyone 'cause they'll pile on me and tell me it's unsafe). Gonna restamp it as above.

I now have me a 44 caliber Express BP lever action!
