Seems like a lot of different options.

I cast a couple bullets, and measure the shank, in order to choose the correct check. That being said, 30 cal gas checks have been hard to locate. Do you have a source?

Wow! The must have just came in. I checked 2 or 3 times this week, and everyone was out of stock.

I prefer Hornady GCs on y 30/31 cal cast bullets or my own made from .014 brass shim stock.

I have Lee 150gr FN that I put home made GC pretty much same as Sages. Powder coated and loaded for 308 Win because Lyman cast book had load data for it and that was only bullet from the book I had. I used rather large ladder test steps of 1.5gr and found that at 24 - 24.5gr I shot really small group so gas checks worked.

I always wanted 30-30 and I was talking to acquaintance of mine and he mentioned he has Winchester 94 30-30. The bluing on receiver is pretty much gone, I don't know if that can be redone but otherwise gun looks ok, no rust and bore was really dusty so I ran 3 patches with boretech and the last one came out almost clean, just carbon fouling. I want that gun! It fits in my hands nicely.

I've used Hornady gas checks and they work fine for 30-30 loads.

They all seem to work; but I'm a big Hornady fan for both my .30 cal. needs.
And buying them makes one less thing I have to make myself.

I have always used these , Sage's standard 30 - copper checks ... on 3 different Lee rifle moulds and they have always fit the cast boolit base perfectly .
I see Aluminum checks are offered ... I have never tried any , they are a few dollars cheaper ... But ...
any downside to Aluminum checks ? I have 3 - 30 cal rifle moulds and 3 - 38 cal pistol moulds that take gas checks . I shoot a lot of 9mm Luger / 357 magnum loads at +1000 fps so like to use the gas checks here ... I always chicken out and buy copper ... are the aluminum checks OK or ...only use them if you can't get copper . I never got into check-making ...don't know much .

I use mostly Hornady checks but all of my .30 caliber checks are Ideal and old as I am . I bought all the Hornady checks from a place that went under in the late 80's , gave $5 a box. Still got 30,000 .35 , 10,000 6mm, 4000 .22 , 3000 .32/8mm, 5000 7mm, 7000 6.5 mm , and a boat load of .45,.44, and .40 . Don't expect to need any more but I plan on getting a few check makers for my sons to use if they run through what I don't use .

I really like the way you think! Mainly because I think that way too. Harles

I'd like to know, too. Particularly, do you get aluminum fouling and how do you remove it?

So far I have had no issues using aluminum gas checks made from old gutter material. Not sure if it is pure aluminum but it is pretty soft.

It is also about 0.019" thick so draws deeper than "normal" gas checks so more bore contact.

They work well in my .303 Lee Enfields and also in my .44 Marlin.

I use a homemade lube adapted from Felix lube.

No aluminum fouling I've noticed. I sometimes get a few tiny silver flakes on the first patch through. I have always assumed it was lead but could be aluminum... or a bit of both. No build up at all though. Accuracy is good.

When Hornady and Lyman were the only game in town, I used the Hornady .30cal. gas checks for the .30-30Win. as well as the .30-06, and 7.62 x 54R CB's. Btw, I had some aluminum GC's that Ben sent me, which I applied and used in the 7.62 x 54R: They fit Ly. #314299 perfectly and left no aluminum fouling in my bbl.

I just make them using aluminum coil stock and a homemade check maker. Had a set made using the plans posted by idz.
