i have a cva fl hawken in 50 cal with a 1 in 48" twist. it goes real good with a prb and 70gr ffg(3"+/- at 50 yards). i shot lubed maxi balls (Emmert's Lube with lanolin/ 70-100gr ffg) with/without wads and 4" at 50 yards is the best that i got. the worst was 8".

i have a 255gr keith in .429". i was wondering if i could buy sabots and shoot the ML? or should i stay with prb?

Take a look at this site: https://mmpsabots.com I've used their green HP sabot with that CB in my 1:28 Knight Bighorn and got a nice tight group @ 50 yd. with a receiver sight.

I shoot patched balls, and would use your load out to 75yards on deer (limited by my eyes and open sights)

The 1-48 is best suited for PRB . Its not an expensive trial unless you want to try every available sabot .

The Maxi only wants the 1 groove lubed and nothing in the top groove , top not needed and throws maxi off balance . i tried the maxi with just the bottom and top/bottom. i just couldn't get it to shoot good. it was good in my two lyman deerstalker(sold them). i guess the cva doesn't like them.

i used to big on prb. i would shoot 3 of them into 1 1/2"+/- at 100 yards. but my eyes ain't what they used to be. i think it was 90gr of 2f goex, but i ain't too sure anymore(it was 25+ years ago). 75 yards is all i can see in my stand(er.. DIY groundblind), so that will be great.

[smilie=l: i like cheap!!!!!!! i got some 50 cal sabots that will shoot .429-.430" boolits for about $7 or 8/50 sabots. i give them a try.

Do you still have the factory adjustable sights? You could have a wandering zero. If you want open sights then have a gunsmith install buckhorn or semi-buckhorn fixed sights. You adjust those by filing the front sight and rear sight to get elevation and a brass punch and mallet to move the dovetail of the front sight for windage.
Another option is the Lyman 57 GPR sights.

You will get much better performance, certainly better than the smoothbore military musket performance that you are getting now.

I have shot quite a few 429 in a 1:48 50 with sabot.

Best results we're with the shorter 200 and 180 grain. They stabilized and shot accurately. I boosted them to over 2000 fps.

All just for fun. I hunt with balls.

Be extremely careful about getting ALL residual plastic out of your bore.

Your load of 70 gr. of ffg and a round ball is a good one. I have a both a CVA and TC .50 Hawken and shoot a 70 gr. equivalent of Pyrodex RS and a round ball with a wonder wad lubed patch. Both are very accurate and the load is pleasant to shoot. I'd not hesitate to use one for hunting with that load.

I have a T/C 50 cal stainless Greyhawk 1/48 that I used to use for winter hunting during our heavy rains. When elk hunting, I used a sabot with a 265 gr. SWC boolit. It is an awesome combination for elk with devastating effects on large bodied Roosevelt elk but I prefer PRB for deer. The deer just seemed to wander off unless I hit a major bone with the SWC, so I would more often than not have to race the rain to follow the blood trail (not easy in our rainforest jungles). PRB were just more "definitive" for deer in my experience. Nevertheless, in an area where elk and deer were open, I used the sabot and SWC.

i have a rmc fiber optic on mine. 3" at 50 yards with an primos bipod and i only have one hand. [smilie=l: its good enuff for where i hunt.

yea, i used 3 flintlocks and every rifle was 70gr of 2f. i used two wolf inlines with it too. i've used powerbelts and maxi balls but never a sabot. i've used prb since i was 14 or 15 yo and they do kill.


i was going to prb in my 50 cal fl cva in online season(this saturday), but dumnkopf forgot to buy the patches and i'll have to order them. i have a tc encore in 50 cal so i'll do a (.429") 255gr keith or a 280gr wfn in a sabot. pyrodex pellets really have gone up in price, its been about 10+/- years, so i'll do 2f. the cva 209 primers(the only one on the shelves) are expensive, $12/100 pcs. i see that they have gone up in price too.

this year i do a ox-yoke liquid wonder lube 1000 plus on my patches. i've been down in the dumps (25+ years ago) the last time i bought a bottle of faulkenberry juice(it looks the same as liquid wonder lube, but its pink). the guy who made faulkenberry juice either quit or retired. but anyway, i used faulkenberry juice on my patches and to clean the gun inside and out. before, i would do 20-25 shots before i even swabbed out the barrel. i've used spit, crisco, DIY lube on patches, bore butter.....you name it, i probably have done it. now, i'm lucky if i do 6 - 7 shots before i swab it(12 shots is most). if i knew that i couldn't get faulkenberry juice, i would have bought 5 or 6 cases of it.

Try using slightly oversized prelubed wad between powder and patched ball. It may tighten up your group.

well, i'm going to use the inline for early doe season. i'm going to use 70gr of goex 2f and a cci 209 primer. i shot the 255gr keith sabot and 280gr wfn sabot(.429") and they both go around 1" at 50 yards using open fiber optics sights. i had to move the rear sight up, it was 6" below my point of aim using 255gr keith sabots. i would have bought pellets but they are too much($30 50/50 pyrodex pellets). for that price, disability paycheck says no, nope, none. dummkopf should have taken my chrony to find out how fast it is.

thats the trick with a 48twist and ball - keep the lid on things just a bit - if that was an earlier CVA with the 66 twist you could expect that same level of accuracy right on up to 90 or 100grains of FF or 85 of FFF (so long as patches hold up)
