Do you guys know of a decent plinking load at no more than 100 yards on some steel for a 50-70. I have a new production McNelly Sharps carbine I will be shooting it from. Looking for smokeless loads too.

The lyman 450 gr with 13.0 grs of unique is a accurate load thats easy on the shoulder.

The Lee 450 grain bullet is very close to the original military bullet and shoots well in my trapdoors.

This, I size mine to .515, it takes that to be accurate in my 1870 Trapdoor rifle. And it rings dingers well. I take old steel welding oxygen cylinders into 1/3's, hang them up with old truck straps from the 2" or wider ratchet straps. It makes it sound like Sunday morning on the rifle range.

My two favourites are either the 450gn Lyman or the 510gn CBE, both shoot to the same POI at 100 yds.

Lyman has a 292gr 45-70 mold. I love this boolit for informal plinking. My Lyman 44th edition showers loads using Unique of 18 to 20 gr. The 20 gr load shows a velocity of a little over 1600 fps. I have used as little as 12 gr with no filler with a velocity of about 1100 fps. Lymans 44th edition does not recommend fillers. As a mater of fact none of Lymans manuals recommend fillers.

I have the Lee 450 & 500 molds new in the box (inherited). Don't know why he had them because he had nothing to shoot them in. Neither do I. Only thing I have in 50 caliber is a flintlock. I was considering a 45-70 down the road(if I live long enough); maybe this is a sign it should be a 50-70, but I don't see it happening.

I use the old Ideal 515139 for my 50 cal Maynard Percussion cartridges and use a Lyman 50-70 sizing die as a sort of “Taper Crimp” die for them. I feel certain this should work well for your reduced loads.
