View Full Version : WTB : Small Primer Punch/Ram for the Old Lee Priming Tool

I seem to have misplaced my complete handheld priming tool that takes the Lee threaded shell holders. I do have another tool, but need the small primer punch to use with cartridges that take small primers. I would be glad to buy a complete tool, if that’s what you have to offer, or just a spare punch. Let me know what you have. Thanks! -Todd

Todd, if you find a supply, I could use one or two as well (large or small) to finish up a couple of partial tools I have. Stay in touch.

Froggie

PS I believe I have a complete small primer tool I could trade for a large primer tool, if you have one to spare(?)

If all else fails I believe that I have a tool that I can get dimensions from to make a copy.

I believe if you did that you would have a market for them already.

I was amazed at the price a batch of them (original) sold for on flea Bay recently. I innocently thought I could pick them up cheaply, but somebody really wanted them.

If somebody makes one for Todd, I’d like to buy one as well.

for a temp substitute try a 10-24 or 32 socket head machine screw, grinding enough thread off to fit the shellholder bore - perhaps a #8 will work as well --
spring from a ballpoint pen??

ps -- the large and small pins are the same with the upper portion turned down to fit small primer shellholder --

Good info guys, I may just make some if there’s a market like that. Could just buy some round bar stock and turn down the top portion.

I lost one a few years ago. Called Lee and they were discontinued, but supplied me with an old stock one.

I would be surprised if the current Lee Precision had any parts for these tools as they were made by the old Lee Custom/Mequon.

Sounds good.. I would buy one or two of each size just to make sure I have plenty of spares. Remember, the “button” on the end needs to be dished for the link below to move in it properly. Would you like a drawing with specs for the one you are missing?

The threaded shell holder priming tool was made as early as 1963, as I have one I bought in 1963 and so says the date on the paperwork. It came with the Zero Error Target load tool, mine in 30-06 with a metal powder measure. I had one in 8mm Mauser also but my son has it now. I have several of those old hand primers and would welcome some small and large primer stems if the price was reasonable. james

Sure thing, if you can sketch me some dimensions, and send them over.

Yep, that’s the one! Todd and I have both mentioned the need for priming punches, him for a small and I need a large. I haven’t really looked at what would actually be involved in turning one myself because I haven’t even turned my lathe on for at least five years. I don’t even qualify as an amateur machinist.

I am just a hobbist.everything I produce on my lathe and mill are for personal use. my tool did not come with a large punch or any large primer shell plates. so I have nothing to go by. I tried priming a 38 with it and it seemed to work ok.289587

Froggieyou are correct about the dish on the bottom of the punch. I used a 1/2" ball end mill to perform that part. 289635289636

Glad you made it back, Todd. Now that Rick459 has made one and we’ve been able to discuss it, I think I’ll be able to turn one for myself on my antique Lompoc/Sheldon lathe. Fortunately it’s equipped with collets, so making one or more out of drill rod should be a fairly straightforward task.

I’d still love to see somebody copy this tool in brass with mild steel internal parts. Of course then the shell holders would become the limiting factor.

Froggie

PS Moderators, if you would like us to continue this in the “Hand Tools” forum, please move the main body of this for us so we don’t lose it all... it has become a pretty useful discussion.

Yes Mods, if we could move this, would be great! I’ve got my replacement thanks to Rick, and a spare tool on the way as well. Thanks to all for the help!
