311284, 311299, 4759 and a Krag

Years ago someone put me onto 311299 with 16.5 grains of 4759. Life was good.

4759 went extinct and I put what was left, about 5lbs, aside and turned to 2400 for all my Krag shooting with the exception of loads with WC872 or 5010.

The time has come to start using the 4759. If you have experience with the Krag rifle, 4759 and 311299 and 311284 I'd love to hear from you. Especially as regards the 311284. I already know that with 311299 16.5 grains is a winner.

Thank you for sharing this with me. I got 1" at 100 yards with 311284 and 17 grains of 2400 in an 03 Springfield. Your experience is just the sort of thing I needed to hear so thank you.

In my Krag carbine, I am currently shooting, 18 gr 4759, with the 311284, giving me 1510 fps. I get 1-2 MOA. Just made up a scout setup with an old unused 2X Leupold scope.

Good shooting! Folks find it hard to believe a good peep sight see I p can give as good groups as a hunting scope.
I have a theory about why those old government barrels shoot so good with lead bullets: the men who worked on development of the .30 Krag cut there teeth on barrels for lead bullets.

Mark...When 4759 went extinct, I found the same charges of 2400 made a good substitute.

I found 4227 also can work well as alternative to 4759 or 2400.
AND, if going to 2400 from 4759, I would definitely start with a lower powder charge,
especially since 2400 was changed to a faster burn.

Years back, I switched from 2400 to 4227 for my 44mag cast Silhouette pistol loads.
The 2400 could get "too hot" when the temps went up.
The 4227 is much less temperature sensitive compared to the double based 2400

I've had several Krags (five or six) and a Ruger #3. All Krags are long gone, but I still have the Ruger. I've also had the #311284 mould for at least thirty-five years as well as the #314299 mould - it's much newer, probably purchased in the late 1990s. I've used much SR4759 in .30-40 and other .30 caliber rifles. My notes from years ago aren't clear, but as I recall, the #314299 was generally more accurate than the #311284. With rare exception, I use a .311" die for all .30 caliber cast bullets. WW alloy bullets come out of this die just under .311".

Can get 2moa out at 200yds. off a bench. #311284 shoots better . I have gotten honest 1 1/2 " at 100yds. with jacketed bullets . All in , I'd work with #311284

I just ran across some 311284s that I have loaded over 37gr RL19 w/#34 primer while looking for something else. They're from the same mold Mark has, NOE's first group buy! These are hard cast, babbitt bullets for all practical purposes. 45 of them need to go downrange. Hey Mark, was that the bullet you were shooting at Camp Perry the year I saw you there? Maybe I'll save my 45 in case someone wants to do a lead bullet challenge there, if they ever do another Roosevelt Match that is.

My first year at Perry I was shooting 311299's with 4759. The second or 3rd year was 311284 with a full case of WC872. Smoked like crazy.

Ive shot a lot of 4759 in my Ruger #3 Krag. I have tried the following boolits in it: 311410, 311466, 311041, 311284, 311299, 312299, 311334. All were gas checked except 311410, sized to .310 or .311", and lubed will Bullspeed lube. The two boolits that stand out accuracy wise is 311299 and believe it or not, 311041. I use between 16-18 grns of 4759 to this day with these two boolits.
