Favorite 30-06 loads

I just got a 30-06 and need some loads for the Lyman 311672 bullet.
I don't have the powders listed in the manuals with a little bit of rx7.

I have IMR-4350, IMR-4320, Reloader 22 and 25
Anyone have a load range for that cast bullet and powders listed?

I will be getting at some point the Lyman 311299 for a heavier bullet as well

For practice and target shooting, I've gone to 'The Load'.
It's 13 grains of Red Dot with a 180-190 gr. cast with a gas check.

Its great for practice, and the cost is in line with buying premium .22s like CCI Stingers.

Do a search for 'The Load' or 'Red Dot in rifles'. A bunch of interesting stuff will pop right up.

I've been looking for red dot and blue dot powders but can't find any as of now. :groner:

After looking up the bullet I found it was not from a lyman mold at all... Its an RCBS 308-309-SIL 165gr bullet ok I'm back to square one.

The powders you have don't really lend themselves to .30 cal. cast.

I'd look in the manuals, make a list, and hunt around for ones that will.

And dig around with a search for things like 'Unique in rifle loads', or 'Bullseye in .30 caliber'.
You'll end up in old forum archives where it has been discussed, as well as other powders
that ya won't find the info. on in printed books.

I'm using 31.5gn of IMR3031 to push a Lyman #311284 (209gns) sized to 0.310" I've tried several 30.06's over many years and find a 4 groove 1:10" twist and deep ridling to e a perfect combination.

No data is given for : IMR-4350, IMR-4320 , Reloader 22 or Reloader 25 .
I am not familiar with the powder designation rx7 ... there was data for Re7 (Reloader 7) and if this is what you have it can be used .

With the 311462 bullet of 160 +/- gr weight Reloader 7 will do just fine in your 30-06 as will most extruded powders in the 2400 - H4895 burning range, especially if a dacron filler is used. Best accuracy will come in the 1750 - 1940 fps range. If you want less velocity then a switch to a bit faster burning powder such as Unique Red Dot, etc. sans the dacron filler will work very well. The IMR-4350, IMR-4320, Reloader 22 and 25 powders are all too slow burning. By the time you get them to a pressure level where the powder burns efficiently the velocity will be to high for best accuracy.

No matter which powder, I’ve always thought 180 grain was the most versatile for hunting game.

Most of my cast 30-06 shooting is with a 1903 RIA for rec fire target and informal CMP matches. I've had good results with various mold designs and weights but always go back to two that are consistently excellent:

Lyman 311299, size to .310, Rooster Red lube, 16gr 2400
H&G #20 (Squibb), size to .310, Rooster Red lube, 12gr Unique

Here's 2 sighters and then 10 for "record" on the 100 Military target at 100 yards. Rifle was my NM M1903A1 with Lyman 48 sights. Load was a 164 gr NOE 310-165-FN (30 XCB) over 20 gr of Alliant 2400 with a dacron filler.

Ok, a 100 yard load with the RCBS 165 grain silhouette bullet that I have great luck with recently:

From a Springfield 1903, mil sights, 100 yards - I get 0.75" groups pretty regularly.

Bullet cast of wheel weight plus linotype, to give 15 Brinnell hardness, then heat treated (water quench) to about 30 Brinnell. Gas checked, sized to 0.311". Lubed with White Label XLox 2500.
11 to 13 grains of Alliant Unique - no filler
Win LR primer

Alliant Red Dot does almost as well in my rifle, but Unique usually noses into the lead.
And Alliant 2400 does quite well at 15 grains in my gun.

Other powders that group under or almost an inch for me are:
IMR 4198
Alliant Blue Dot
SR 4756 (discontinued)

And, like LG above, I really like the NOE "30 XCB" bullet for target loads, it often shoots just slightly better than the RCBS, but not always.

I’ve found the Lyman accuracy load with the 311672 (not what the OP has, but what he originally asked about) of 18.0 grains of Unique (CBH#4) to be very accurate in several .30-06 rifles. I mention this because it may help someone.

ETA: Don’t use fillers with Unique.
