Anything anyone haves would help, looking to make a thorough list eventually for case reforming as well as for which cases would use which loading blocks etc.; If someone already has this though, lots less work for me :) Thanks in advance.

You need a copy of "Cartridges of the World" by Frank Barnes.

Glad you're getting the latest. I've got the original, No.5, and No.8. Lots of the newer shortened, expanded, squished, etc. AR cartridges aren't in No.8. But.......I don't have an AR! :D

For a quick desktop reference, I find an online search for a cartridge usually turns up a wiki page that lists all interesting dimensions. I do this when comparing two cases and not near my books (Nonte, Barnes, Donnelly).

Exactly right, Sir. It is where I go for my research. Many cartridges I have never heard of are listed and a click away.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rifle_cartridges

And a couple of hours work and the info can be transferred to a spreadsheet.

<ebay links are verboten sorry>

Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions is also a good reference for case conversion

it could be interesting to see a family tree of cartridges

For most popular cartridges there is two, 8 X 57 Mauser and 375 H&H. Of course there's several but those two head sizes cover a multitude.

I’d add 30-30 wcf (iirc necked down from another cartridge) to that list.

I already have the 30-30 in my list.

I have 3 lines for cartridge names on the long sides of the reloading block, but some rim diameters you have far more than 3 cartridges sharing the same rim, body, or belt diameter (whichever's largest.) Think RCBS case holder # 3, that list is not short!

Plan is to make an OpenSCAD include file that will let me do anything needed with one common data file. (Make pocket ammo carriers, reloading blocks, ammo boxes, dummy cartridges, whatever.) I have a loading block design that will hold from 22LR up to 10 Gauge, for me that will be handy. (different prints for different rim diameters but I may try making a multiple round block in a bit.)

Then I won't need to maintain 37 different data files with different data and try to avoid typos as I copy the same data into multiple places! One rule of computing is that "You shall only have ONE master database, and back it up regularly!" :)

Interesting! Sadly to do what I want to do, I need enough data to make a dummy round for that cartridge, some data is missing there, SOFMatchstaff

I've found multiple errors in Cartridges of the World and some have been carried over into http://www.cartridge-corner.com/heads.htm after taking a a quick look at it.

I like using Municion.org. Their new website is still being updated, but the old one: http://old.municion.org/ works well and is pretty extensive. You'll need to convert from metric (divide by 25.4).

I do that conversion often, more often TO mm as I use mm in OpenCAD (mm is sorta the usual units for 3D designs for most folks.)

Interesting pages. I didn't see 7TCU on the last but have the data :)

A more accurate source of the data needed is Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges by Ken Howell. Unfortunately, it is out of print and pretty expensive on the used book sites.

Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges by Ken Howell is back in print :

https://www.huntingtons.com/store/product.php?productid=19665&cat=0&page=1

selling for $30.00 and well worth it.. i refer to my copy often

That isn't a bad price! Beats the $200+ prices I saw on the older edition.

I paid nearly twice that($30) when I ordered it when it first came out. I bet a lot of bookstores will have to revise their prices.

Ken Howell passed away several years ago. I don't think it has been revised so all copies should be the same. I could be wrong though.

Try to find a copy of Maj George Nonte's book of cartridge conversions.

This is a pay site but has dimensions of lots of cartridges including rim diameter.

If you search for “survival reloading” you will find the “endtimesreport” which has a chart of common cartridge dimensions which can help you with reloading in tough times when you don’t have the correct die set. There are also reloading procedures for lots of reloading tools, both new and old. Lee Loader, 310 tool, etc!
Also neat articles like “Reloading the Hard Way” which describes how the Filipino resistance fighters had to do it.

Cartridges of the World has all the dimensions you could want.

COTW does have quite a few errors in their European names and descriptions and some in their dimensions. I have found it to be mostly dependable with American cartridges.

Donnely's has served me well.

The back on any Lee shell holder pack. From 17 Rem through to 458 Win Mag and 5.7x28 and 500S&W you're covered.

Doesn't have dimensions but sure has the shell holder sizes.

Today you would be well advised to have a book of conversions on the shelf. Being out, is not shooting, otherwise.

I wish when people went to the trouble to make a spreadsheet as extensive as this one that they would somehow lock the column headings to be visible as you move down the sheet. It is a real headache to keep moving back to the top to verify what dimension you are looking at.

I haven't really messed with Excel since I retired 15 years ago and don't remember much about its capabilities or how to use and modify it.

This link may have what you need:

It's sort of like-a-bible for the cartridge manufacturers, I think.

I resize 270 into 30.06. I don't load the converted casings hot though. I use them to load with cast data. I have also trimmed down 454 casings to 45 colt.

Having accidentally become a hard core sort ..........

I've made a lot of shorter cases from longer cases that shared or were within .002 of sharing rims . 358 Win from 06' and 308 , 7×57 , 257 Roberts , and 7.7×58 from 06' lately . I did a few 6.5×50 SR from 243 which isn't as detailed as 32 Rem from 30-30 .

The 300 Savage , 308 , Mauser , and 06' family's account for probably real close to 50% of rimless cartridges since 1910 .

The belted mag case , why I can't remember where it came from I don't know , accounts for about 10% with cartridges in 24,25,etc to 458 .

The beltless mag is responsible for at least another 10% , if you include the rebated rim of the 284 Win and a host of shorter AR cartridges that share rims and heads .

The 221 Rem is parent to a whole host of cartridges from 17-35 cal .

That's just rimless rifles nearly every pistol caliber has a unique rim dia or 2 .
Rimmed rifles ......... Dozens of dia without even going pre WWII .
There are a dozen rim dia for shotguns without going too far into uncommon extremes .
