IMR 4756 was my go to powder for heavy .38 Special loads years ago but the gun stores around here have not stocked it for years, so I am out and have been for a good 6 years. I have heard it could be used in the .357 & .41 magnums but never used it for such. james

when I saw title imr 4755, my first thought , is that one of those real slow powders for 50 cal and 20mm military stuff, but I guess its a typo
4756, ive still got some, used in pistol calibers and shotgun loads like 20 gauge hunting loads.
a long while back I was using it in some 9mm loads before power pistol, or be-86 or cfe pistol came out

Think 4756 has been discontinued for quite some time

Are you talking about SR-4756? I've never seen it as IMR-4756. If so, I use it mostly for 16 bore, 1 oz., 2 1/2 dr. equiv. loads. In my old books I see data for several handgun cartridges but have never tried it. For those I mostly use SR-7625, another discontinued powder. I was given an abundance of both shortly after SR-4756 was discontinued.

SR 4756 was made by Dupont(I have an old empty can) and is not IMR. I was going off memory and not a good idea. I think Dupont powder were bought out by IMR but I am not sure about that as my memory is not as good as it once was. james

IMR dropped the SR powders several years back. I use SR-4756 in the hyphenated calibers that are chambered in pistols and rifles. Kind of like Unique for velocity range, but it burns much cleaner.

IMR Powder was split out of du Pont.

Nearly 50 years ago I loaded plenty of 12 ga. 1 1/4 loads with Lee hand tools and 4756. Kept my single shot Stevens feed for after school duck hunts.

I've used it for 20ga loads, as well as .38spl. It came in 1/2 pound green cans that I have not used in years; time to break out the "old stock".

My old friend Rick swore by it for stout 45 Colt applications.

SR-4756 Excellent for 100 or 200 target cast bullet loads in the 30 caliber military rifles and smaller cases.
But, yeah, IMR discontinued production about 8 years ago and I'm on my last can. Sigh.

Almost the same accuracy as SR-4759, but a lower power range. 4759 is one powder I wish would REALLY be resurrected.

good luck, garrisonjoe

I used it in magnum 20 gage shot shells. You could get 1300+ fps in a 1oz #5s in 2-3/4" shells that would turn pheasants inside out inside 30 yds then I started using it in my 44 mag. I still have 2 -1lb. cans but it only gets used for shotshells now

Was my go-to power for .45acp when it was available...it is a very bulky powder which is a good thing in fat cases where it could be easy to double-charge a case..

I had stock up on it when they where saying that it will not be produce anymore , I use it in one of my load for my 10 ga , beside Blue Dot. I also use SR 4756 for some of my other rounds .good powder to bad they stop make it, like some of the others, If they were to make a sub for it then that would help. Like was done with one other powder , forgot what one.

OH, its the most dangerous powder one can ever own. Extremely toxic also. You should not attempt to use this. If you send it to me I will dispose of it properly.

just kidding of course, enjoy !

A friend remarked that SR 4756 is not only clean burning, but almost without muzzle flash as well.

I use sr 4756 for 38 special heavier boolets (158 grns) with good results. The sr was an abbreviation for small rifle ( at least according to Hodgdon when I called them). I also use SR7625, a lot! 3.4 grns under a Lyman 358345,115 grn semi wadcutter. The tec I spoke to at Hodgon I was told that the SR powders were discontinued in 2016. I asked about a replacement for st7625 and titegroup was what was recommended. I didn’t ask about 4856 but I got the Impression that titetgroup would be a good replacement for that too. At least for pistol loads. I’m not overly impressed with titegroup in light loads. I find that it can be dirty if your not filling the case.

After my above post I decided to get out my Lyman 49th edition and check out the low data for SR 4756. Turns out that all the loads I found for rifle or for Cast Boolets! Nothing for jacketed. So I guess Hodgdon discontinued it because I’d boolet casters are an important to them! Lol

..."was" a GREAT powder for turning "Specials" into Magnums....

Was my go to powder for high velocity loads in .38 Special, .44 Special, .38 Super, .45 Colt, .45 ACP and .45 AR...

Only reason I didn't use more of it was cost... It took a little more weight per round (for the same velocity) than Unique and was a lot more expensive per pound.

I believe "SR" was "Sporting Rifle"...

From what I have read AAC-7 is a close replacement for handguns...

And "IMR" is Improved Military Rifle is my understanding of the old Dupont nomenclature.

But I've been wrong before, after all, I am a man.

Yes gentlemen, SR did stand for Sporting Rifle going all the way back to Phil Sharpe and, IMR is
Improved Military Rifle.

I use SR-4756 for square 16 bore loads. I use sometimes SR-7625 in 44 Spl. and 45 Colt.

Put me in that column that bemoans the loss of SR-4759....

I bought two 8 lb jugs of this powder recently for $15 a lb. I use it in my .41 magnum ruger black hawk and several Milsurps. My 1889 Schmidt Rubin loves 12.5 grains. Meters well and I was glad to pick it up.

I use it in my SAA .44 Spcl. It’s an accurate and powerful load.
