Air Ride Suspension on an '05 Town Car

How does one let the air out of the rear bags? Sensor(s) or solenoid(s) must have failed. Not my vehicle but friend bypassed the harness to compressor and inflated bags to max before he could disconnect and doesn't know how to let the air back out.

Open the trunk and look on the sides for a switch, may be covered with a fabric flap. Turn it off and wait.

If it turns into a lot of money you can replace the bags with springs and shocks in a kit. Easy fix on You Tube. About $200.

Usually it's a bad level sensor that causes problems.

I second the conversion to coil springs.... I've worked on Mercedes air ride suspension, and it's the classic 'great when it works, worse than terrible when it doesn't' situation!

My brother had terrible issues with the air suspension in a Mark VIII. Always in “low rider” mode. I don’t think he ever resolved it even with 30 years of aircraft/car/boat mechanicing experience.

Run air lines from air bags to a manifold in the trunk, use a cheap 12 volt air compressor to fill bags and a tire inflation checker(that little nub on the backside) to let air out to a certain amount.

Beautiful cars! Always wanted one, but the suspension issues were well known.

Town cars are much easier. They only have bags in the rear. The system can be tricky to diag. A dealership might be your best bet. They have dedicated equipment and are prone to see the same problems. If the compressor assy. is shot then replacing the bags with springs would likely be the most economical way to go and is very easy. I have done the same with older Devilles and Sevilles. The trick is learning how to turn the suspension light on the dash off.

I had the air bags replaced with springs on my 2001 Towncar and it worked great. I have a 2005 Towncar that still has the air bags but the post that holds one of the bags broke. That was pricey to fix. The dealer wanted $3400 to replace the post but a local welder did it for $1400.

The dealer was most likely going to replace the entire rear axle assy.
