I recently picked up a 1905 Ross rifle in .303 British caliber. This is one of 20,000 that came into the states. It is reported that Ross rifles are supposed to be accurate.
Well I certainly believe it. I had the rifle out twice this weekend because I was developing and testing cast bullet loads like I always do when I get another gun.
Tried the usual dot powders to start, 13 Red dot, 13 green dot, 14 blue dot, 13 unique. Bullet was the Lee .312 160 grain that was hi-tek coated.

Rifle was shooting high so burned up about ten rounds getting it on target. I was using the sight flipped up. Groups were so so.
Loaded more up Saturday night and headed back to the range on Sunday morning. Tried some slower powders this time.
Sr 4759, 5744, and I4227and decided to use the noe .316299 sized to .316.
20 grains of 4227 shot one heck of a group. .831 for 5 shots at 100 yards. What a sweet shooting rifle. It is missing the small hand guard that fits behind the rear sight.

Thanks for sharing. What a neat rifle that doesn't seem to miss that missing wood!

Interesting thread, those Ross rifles are known for accuracy. A friend of mine is working with one now too so I will follow this and relay info to him as he is not a member here. I would be curious to see what kind of results you get with the NOE 316299 and Varget powder.

I do have some varget but not sure I can improve on the above load. I can certainly try it. My m1 likes those slower powders especially imr 4895. I would tell your friend to size his bullet to the throat, my Ross rifle has not had the chamber enlarged. I will have the Ross at the range along with my Berthier this Saturday, stay tuned....

If you like to read, you need to read a book called A Rifleman Went to War.

He talks about being a machine gunner in WW1 using the Ross rifle to snipe Germans it’s a very good read

I do have that book saved on my Kindle fire and started to read it awhile ago, need to get back to it. Thanks a bunch.
