I have a Model 71 Mauser (11mm). The normal bore size is .446. I have bullet molds for that size. I also have a bullet mold for another "11mm" that drops at .439. This is a Lyman mold and has several normal lube grooves and was not designed with paper patch in mind. Can you paper patch a standard cast bullet with lube groves? I was thinking a PP might bring the undersized bullet up to a workable diameter.

What do you think??

I haven't tried it myself but yes, several people here use regular cast boolits sized if necessary then patched. Some size after patching too but again I don't.

The Lyman paper patch boolit designs also have shallow grooves and I have found for at least one of my guns that it likes the smooth paper patched slug knurled with annular rings from a tool I made.

So, the short story is that grooves don't hurt and may even help.

Something to consider is the rule of thumb that for BP the boolit should be under bore size then patched to just over bore size. Also, the boolit should be pure lead or at least soft alloy.
For smokeless the boolit should be about bore size then patched to groove size.

Search the forum and you will find lots of info.

These are all Lee 457-405F's as cast and patched with 20 lb (.004") paper to .471".

The 2nd and 3rd slugs are GG designs that have been paper patched.

I only use lube groove castings.
I am smokeless, not BP.
So far, so good. I am sticking with this system. It works real well.
