Casting for .270 Winchester

Anyone have any success in casting for their .270? I currently shoot Nosler 130 gr high-velocity bullets, but would be interested in casting if it’s practical. I currently only cast pistol-type boolits. Thanks!

I started with the Lee 277 135RF but found better accuracy with the RCBS 277-150 grain boolit. I am currently loading with either 10 grains of Red Dot for around 1400-1500fps or with W748 for about 2000fps. Lubed with Carnuba Blue and either a home made or Hornady gas check. Either gas check does the job and does not make a difference in accuracy. The 10 grain Red Dot load took two deer last year and if I do my part will do the same this year.

I just picked up a .273 sizer to play around with. I will size a few at .273 and then powder coat. I expect to gradually open up the die and powder coat 'em as I go until I find a viable end result. Sounds like, from the above, 10 gr of Red Dot will be a good place to start.

Ive found that I cannot powder coat that particular RCBS boolit. The nose will no longer fit into the throat, and I am just below the neck in the case right now. Coat 5 or so and load some dummies to test.

My rifle is a 270 Savage (250/3000 necked up) and with an old Ideal 130gn GC & PC'd, I can push this 132gn boolit to 2,500fps with acceptable accuracy. IMHO this smaller case is a perfect case size for cheap and efficent cast boolit shooting.

That is an interesting caliber! Did you build it or is it a common build down under?

I had it built about 7 years ago after I had a pacemaker fitted and the 270AI was just too much recoil. Taken red deer and wild dogs with it and it is just a pleasure to shoot and only gives about 400fps away to the big cousin.

Medium capacity cases have always been ideal for cast boolits, 222Rem, 250Savage, 270savage and 7.62x39 are all good rifles for loading case.

Even my 250AI is an exceptional performer with 100gn cast boolts!

What kind of powder is are you using to develop these rifle loads? I have just started my experimentation with 4227 and 3031 in 308 Winchester with mainly 170 grain cast and some 150 grain fmj-bt with 3031.

My 270 Savage with 130gn cast boolit. It is near perfect shape as the nose just touches the lands when chambered! The mold is an Ideal 280412 which copies the profile of the very accurate Lyman 311284.

I have quite a success casting for the 270. My two favorite molds are the RCBS 270-130 and the H&G 69. I cast both from fairly soft alloys for this application, and stay below 2000fps. I gas check (Hornady) and size at .280” with 2500+ lube. This is as cast for the RCBS that falls from the mold at .279”. The three main powders I use are: Unique, 2400 and 4198. 12g of Unique (1500-1600fps) and 16.5g of 2400 (1600-1750fps) are working well for me. I shoot these in an old Winchester M70 and a J.C. Higgins M50 (FN made 98 action), both with peep sights and I get consistently 2-3” groups at 100 yards. I am sure that a scoped rifle will improve these results.

I believe you will find that is WAY too small as 270 is actually .277 not .270.

My best cast boolit for my Ruger M77 is an H&G #69, sized to .280

I've had a 5 or 7 shot group at 90ish yards that I can cover with a Nickle, a close 2nd is the Lyman 2804012 sized to .280

Both of the above mention boolits are gas checked.

I have three molds for my 270 W and the rifle is an old Mod 70. One is an old Lyman Loverin style 118 gr semi-point. One is the Lee mold. The last is a custom NOE 124 gr flat point with two cavities, a plain base and a gas check. All have shot well for me producing 2 MOA or better with iron sights. I think the better hunting boolit is the Lee but the more accurate is the NOE gas checker. All but the plain base have liked MV's of about 1850. The real surprise has been that NOE plain base boolit which has given great accuracy at 100 yards at an MV of 1350 using Red Dot powder which makes it very economical and low noise. The hard part now is just finding a mold to buy in almost any caliber.
