Has anyone played around with loading 35 Whelen sub-sonic? I've done some searching, but haven't come up with anything. I want to give it a whirl, but would like to see what others have experienced.

No, but I have plans to try and wring out my 358 Winchester with subsonics. I have actually shot a few subsonic rounds and they were pretty darn quite through my suppressor.

I don't have one, but I'm thinking you'll be able to stabilize the heaviest boolit offered by Accurate, a 324gr RF, at 1050fps with a 1:14 twist. That would be just short of 800ft*lbs of energy.

I also have a .358 Win in a Ruger M77. I suppose I could thread the muzzle. My 35 Whelen Encore barrel is already threaded, so I was looking to play with that in the near term.

I have a custom mold that was patterned off the 358009. Bullets drop at 280 gns as I recall. I would start with that anyway. Never shy about getting more molds though.

I tried a lot of combinations of bullet weights and different powers in my ruger 77 358 Winchester and never got vertical stringing to less than 6" at 60 yards sub sonic. it never shot tight groups ever to begin with, about 2.5" at 100 yards with any load FWIW.
Its one of those projects i got to get to, new barrel

My old Ruger 77 35 Whelen worked really well with the RCBS 200 FN and a couple of grains of Red Dot. I'd load it to 950 fps and it was one hole accurate at 50 yards and quieter than a 22LR.

My M77 Hawkeye is actually pretty accurate. MOA with the Saeco #352 and H4895.

Did you need to use any filler?

No need to with Red Dot. You can tip the muzzle up before the shot but it didn't seem to matter.

I have used red dot in a 350 Rem for subsonic loads. It worked well at the 20yd indoor range with one ragged hole.

I’ll have to give Red Dot a whirl. Anyone try Trail Boss?

I tried trail boss in my my 375 RUM and 235 grain Speers. I couldn’t hit paper at 100 yards…or 50 yards. It didn’t start grouping half way acceptable groups till I got it up to 2650 FPS with a starting load of normal use powder. By that time it was defeating the purpose because it wasn’t fun to shoot…again.lol. That thing will purple my shoulder even with a KDF brake I had installed. If I had cast in .375 plus diameter I’d try it again. I do have a 7600 Remington 35 Whelen but it won’t feed cast. Luckily both my 35 Rem 7600 and 336 chambered in 35 Remington will cycle cast and will use less powder to get it done.

I shoot a 357 Maximum Contender G2 with a 16inch, 1-14 twist using 310gr swaged powdercoated boolits. They stabilize out to 100 yards at 1050fps at the muzzle. Functionally, it is the same as your Whelen sub-sonic concept. I also have a 10 inch, 1-10 twist barrel that shoots the same round with even more-gooder accuracy. Its a really fun "walk in the woods" rifle.

Super quiet with a Liberty Infinity-X suppressor with VV N110 powder.
